you get magic by traveling from dimension to dimension, once you travel from a dimension you can't go back to the one you came from. Why this works is because every time you travel from a dimension your soul is eroded by the travel, and that empty space is filled with magic. As result the more you travel the more powerful your magic becomes. If you travel from too many dimensions, (there are nine) you will lose your soul completely, and are easy to possess and manipulate.
