Due to limited resources for the kids, they had to come up with more creative and practical defense/ ordinance weapons when salvaging from the security force was no longer viable.
The game of cricket was quite popular among many cultures which made resources plentiful. Once the explosives could be effectively put in place of the original cork core, the Cricket grenade was born. The outer shell was either cut in half or, more frequently, sliced a bit at the top. A button fuse is created on top.
In many cases due to the nature of the grenade, it is still mistaken as regular cricket ball until explosive goes off.
