Alex was born as the oldest child of the Tarvin family in Airedale, Amera, where he lived alongside his mother and his father Zanis, as well as his two younger sisters Lori and Shannon. Tragically, his mother died giving birth to Shannon, leaving the children to be raised by Zanis, now a single father.

When Alex was 10, a plague broke out in Amera. Though the family tried to avoid it best they could, Zanis eventually ended up catching it. Fearing for their safety, he sent the children away to Sheffield Orphanage with what belongings they could carry as well as name tags around their wrists to identify them; however along the way they were separated. While Alex and Lori got to their destination safely, Shannon vanished, having wandered aboard a ship destined for Gaelen.

Once the plague ended three years later, Alex and Lori reunited with Zanis. Though the three lived a relatively normal life, they all miss Shannon dearly and worry for her safety. Alex in particular was ridden with guilt for not paying attention and letting Shannon wander off without realizing it until it was too late. Little did they realize that she was alive and well – albeit in a neighboring continent, raised by a noble family.
