Rethic was born to the previous King and Queen of the dwarven territory of Klence, and as their oldest child it was expected he would take the throne when they passed or abdicated. It was never what he wanted, the young dwarf Prince was always more interested in exploration or the like, but he knew his duties as well. He married the woman his parents arranged for, and took the throne when it was time but it has always been clear his heart was never in it. Azla, the Queen, takes the duties much more seriously and runs the country far more than Rethic does, which is fine by him since it leaves him time to pursue other interests with his status as King. For them both it's a bit of the perfect scenario; she has all the power she wants, and he can leave the power he never wanted in the hands of someone more competent.
