His morals can be rather skewed. (Most people don't hold children captive against their will)
Due to the stress of managing his kingdom and its current wars he is rather desperate. He was even willing to allow Lower Class to win the war so long as it could all be over.

Lord Bren becomes more and more annoyed with the people of Lower Class who refuse to allow magic in their kingdom.

He is quite talented in the art of poison which only fuels his fascination for the inner workings of the human mind.
Though it is never seen throughout the course of the story he is a formidable magician.

He is very busy in his kingly duties. Higher Class was at war for quite a long time and it keeps him rather occupied.
Though he does enjoy perusing his private library.

Bren tries his best to be a good ruler over his people, but over his last few years of ruling he got a little mentally unstable.
He is very stubborn and morally off
