There was a giant machine (that looked similar to that Hurricane-thingy at the Dells). That machine was supposedly invented to completely destroy the soul.

The people in charge of Solder were afraid of the monsters that now roamed everywhere. So anyone who did not fall in line and help the community would be punished.
Abiliene was punished two or three times, and when she still did not 'conform', she was taken to the machine for her soul to be extinguished.
She escaped. But at the cost of her helpers life.
