William wants to show his family that his inheritance of his father’s income was a sound choice, and at times he strives to calm the tension between his younger brothers, Yates and Marion.
He separates himself from his brothers in all aspects besides occasionally preventing chaotic fights, which means he fails to recognize the signs of Marion’s slowly devolving mental state. He sees himself as much more mature than his brothers, despite being only half a decade older than the youngest, which does not help matters.
Historically accurate “Southern” racial prejudices, but not on an incredibly radical scale, as his family does not own any slaves. He is more indifferent to the problem, but does fall victim to racist ideologies that he, as a white Southern Gentryman is naturally superior to African American slaves and people such as Irish Immigrants.
