While he sees his crew as his family and would do anything to protect them, he is also consernde about his image among them. He is affraid, that if the crew would know about how he feels about them, they would think him soft and wouldn't bee able to depend on him. So he does his best to act like the perfect, "hard but fair", wise type of captain, that he would like to be, while beeing devoured by his doubts and concerns on the inside
