Born human to parents who lived in the city that at the time was budding up around The Crystal River Academy, Yara had a fairly normal upbringing and even attended the academy as a student. But that was where things went wrong, for an experiment got out of hand and left her nearly dead the year she was supposed to graduate.

As she lay dying the school offered her a choice; accept that death or allow the Nachtschatten vampire family to transform her and take her in. The next head of the family was attending the school at the time and had heard of Yara's abilities, so thinking that she might make a wonderful thrall for the family she was given the chance to keep on living.

It wasn't a choice for Yara - she wanted to live, and functional immortality was her opportunity to not just live but thrive. However the transformation wasn't easy, and Yara had to repeat her final year at the academy to graduate but it was absolutely worth it as she went on to become one of the most powerful vampires in The Onyx Court but she never wanted to lead and settled for being an advisor to all the leaders since.
