Hilma's family moved around a lot, even before she was born; they were part of a nomadic dwarven group never settling in one place for more than a few months. Forging, smithing, and making some coin before using that money to move to the next location. Not for any nefarious reason but because they were a group that loved the life and wanted to see as much of the world as they could.

Still by the time she was a teenager Hilma had left them and joined up with a gang in Starmouth, causing trouble around the city and extorting the mine workers. But nothing good lasts forever; the gang was eventually rounded up to face the law and Hilma was put in jail.

When she got out she had no care to repeat the experience, or to hang around the old gang members that managed to survive and get out with her. So she made her way to Dagan and set up The Fantastic Midget because the gang would always say "You did fantastic, midget!" when she did a good job. A callback to a life she enjoyed but didn't want to go back to so she'd never forget to keep herself on the straight and narrow.

Even after The Collapse happened she kept the tavern. Dagan became lawless, but everyone knows to respect those who set up before and stayed after all the chaos so Hilma is safe enough. And she's had plenty of time to figure out how to brew different alcohols, some of which are considered the finest in the city now.
