Mary-Anne's parents were both part of Astrologian's Guild in Firebend, and Mary-Anne herself was raised in it. She showed many qualities that would make her a fantastic member of the guild but she never wanted it. She wanted to travel, to live her own life, to find something for herself outside the guild and the walls of the desert city.

The Collapse happened when she was only 2, and growing up in the aftermath of such devastation was hard. At first Mary-Anne thought she might try to find a reason it happened, but knowing that scholars smarter and with access to more resources failed to do so kept her away from such lofty goals.

In the end despite all her grand ideas Mary-Anne only made it as far as Lost Bell. The island is home to many magical mysteries, and sits on a nexus point that makes opening gates to other planes easier than it would normally be. It was here that she met the owner of a tarot shop and decided to put her powers to use. When the owner passed from age the shop was left to Mary-Anne, and she quickly did plenty of renovations and rebranding before continuing to put her skills to use as a tarot reader.

Now she is known across the island as one of the most prolific readers, almost always busy with appointments and the like and making more than enough to sustain herself. It isn't what she dreamed, but it's a comfortable living and she finds comfort in helping people.
