While Thylian is primarily a dwarven city, there are obviously other races that call the place home as well. So it was with Paw's family, and because the area is a major trade hub between the surface and places deeper underground Paw grew up exposed to many languages. They are conversationally adept in quite a few because of that upbringing, for while many of the traders knew common they would whisper to one another in their native tongues and it was to Paw's advantage to be able to understand them.

While they have no magical prowess, even a place like The Crystal River Academy needs to teach nonmagical subjects. Paw heard about this from a passing caravan, and thought that their experience might allow them to work for the Academy.

Now Paw teaches most of the common language classes, helping those for whom common is a second language and using their understanding of other languages to keep students in line when they think they can whisper to one another or pass notes assuming he won't understand them.
