When Ami and Ri ran away from Ri's abusive father, Ami met Kansen. Kansen took them in and loved them, even though he could've been killed for being in a hybrid relationship. Ri was hesitant of being close to Kansen because of her past experience with her biological father, but she saw how her mother was happy and was taken care of by Kansen, and how Kansen loved Ri as well, so Ri became closer to him. Ri loves Kansen like a father and would also die for him.
