Heidi was born to Diana Hawthorne and raised with all the kids her mother rescued. She knew she was different being biologically related to the woman, even if she was never treated that way, and until she was 8 she had no idea who her father was.

At that point she had to become aware, as her father was Paul Clemond and his passing meant his powers transferred to her. She was slowly dying for being unable to control the massive magical energy he had. The group of adventurers that had been working for Paul figured this out and saved her, taking her to the realm of the gods to help integrate his powers in a safe manner.

It was never what Paul had intended, of course, as his plan was always separating their souls and powers to be reincarnated, but it was possibly for the best that she took over in his stead. With a host of apprentices and the adventurers to help her she slowly began to fix what her father had ruined or ignored, and since then has made things better as much as she can given her age and relative inexperience.
