He was born to Hunter Granger and Jasmine {Whitbread} Granger on their farm. His mother was very smothering toward him while his father mostly stayed out of his way. The family had adopted an abandoned young colt when Cole was 3. They named him Phantom and he grew up alongside Cole.
Once, when he was 6, he fell off a small loft in the barn while Hunter turned his back. He broke his right leg and fractured his right arm. Jasmine immediately blamed her husband and she yelled at him to go to find a healer for Cole. After Cole was healed, Hunter and Jasmine had a huge argument. She got worse after that, constantly invaded his privacy, not letting him explore, and not let him work on the farm alone.
When he got older, he started to distance himself more and more from his family. Jasmine eventually started to give him more freedom, at the suggestion from Hunter, but the damage had already been done. He only really spoke to his 2 younger friends, Lily and Ayana, that were kids of his parent's friends, Karla and Tristan. Even then, he longed for a friend around his age.
One day when Cole was 14, he was going around doing his chores, saw Dakota napping in his father's barn and yelled at them to leave. They argued for a bit before Hunter came out to see what his son was doing. Dakota explained that they were cold and looking for a place to stay. Feeling sympathy for the young teen, he allowed them to stay with the family, much to the annoyance of Cole.
After a month and a half, they asked if they could leave. Cole was ready for them to leave, Hunter and Jasmine insisted they stay. They agreed but only if they could live outside of the house, suggesting the barn. Hunter denied and said that he would help build a house for them that was close by. The entire family and Dakota started building the house and they continued to live in their home.
During that time, Dakota constantly tried to get Cole to open up to them. After many attempts, Cole finally started to open up, bit by bit. After the house was built, Cole felt guilty for turning Dakota away and asked if he could stay with them that night. His parents agreed and they spent the night together. Dakota opened up about their past and Cole opened up about why he thinks he acts the way he does. They grew to be very close friends. As Cole was heading back to his home, Dakota gave him a heart shaped rock, as a sign of their friendship. Cole came back the next morning, in high spirits to both the surprise and joy of his parents. Everything seemed fine until 2 years later...
