James usually keeps his hair well groomed and cropped close in a professional cut. He rarely grows it out, even if it happens to be in style.

Definitely yes, still have to figure out how many, where, and what. HOWEVER he uses glamour and illusion to hide all of them when not among the Mob, and some are specifically imbued with runes and magic to be hidden except when certain conditions are met. Most people who look at him - such as Ellen, or his parents - can't see them at all.

For example: one of note, he does have a prominent tattoo stretching from the inside of his right wrist to about halfway down his arm. It is the a modified family crest for his branch of the Bailey clan that is used by the Irish Mob, and it is warded to be invisible except to other supernatural creatures, and Aware Humans. If you can see it, it means you are aware of magic. If you are in the criminal world, the crest is recognizable as a gang symbol. If you're not, then it just appears to be another family crest like most Irish families have.

James always dresses highly professional. He can rarely be seen out of a three piece business suit. His idea of dressing down is a collared polo with his slacks and leaving the suit jacket behind. He hasn't been seen in loungewear (outside of his bed partners) since Ellen was still in high school. He's the kind of guy who always shows up even if roused from bed after an hour's sleep, perfectly dressed and ready to impress. (Let's be real, his powers help him immensely in this area.)

He's definitely got them, but right now there are none of note.

Russell is well aware that James is not his son. So is James. But it's never been spoken of aloud, and Russell has always treated James as if he were his blood son.

Still, James is convinced that Russell only tolerates him and his existence and feels that Russell is intentionally distant with him in a way he isn't with Ellen. As a result of this, James is far closer to Vivian, his mother, than his father.

No one outside of James and his two parents know that James is not Russell's son by blood. Vivian was already pregnant when she met Russell, and he agreed to raise the child as his own and even signed the birth certificate. It just so happens James resembles Russell enough that they appear related as father and son.

James' birth father has never been in the picture and Vivian has no idea who it is, even, outside of the fact that he was a supernatural creature thanks to James' magic.

Despite the tension between James and Russell, James has had zero inclination to seek out his birth father. Just as much as a point of protection for himself than anything else, worried that even the barest whispers that he has a different father might leak out.

Jimmy has an awkward relationship with his half-sister. He doesn't like her, hence why they are more distant than Ellen wants to be; he thinks she is a spoiled brat and he is jealous and resentful of how much love and attention she gets from their parents, and that she is a daddy's girl in the way he can only dream of being.

He hates that he feels any sort of brotherly affection for her (because he totally does), but it can't be helped that she does love him so he begrudgingly indulges her feelings. (Also she's adorkable, he can't help it though he hates it.) Push comes to shove, though, James is Ellen's protector and would not hesitate to obliterate anyone that hurts her.

He was endlessly amused when his perfect, blonde, ballerina little sister decided to become a cop, but you can bet he has leveraged his mob connections to ensure her safety more than once. And he made sure personally she would never end up in the crossfire or stumble across anything that would lead her to discover the Bailey branch of the Irish Mob when she still lived in NYC.

April 24th. He was born in the spring and is two years older than Ellen.

Addison, Wisconsin. Lived there until the age of 12 when they moved to NYC for Ellen's ballet career. He has never left NYC since then.

James has a master's degree in accounting and personal finance. He always did incredibly well in school, and it was actually just as much on his own merit as him cheating his way through. Which, let's be real, he did as well, liberally.

• He was 13 when he discovered the 'family secret' of the Irish Mob background, so just after a year of the family moving back to NYC for Ellen's ballet career. He was already aware that he wasn't a Bailey by blood, but capitalized on his "father's" name in order to get himself into the Irish Mob's good graces. It also healed the rift Russell had made in leaving as James made it seem like Russell was offering his "only son" to them as payment for his crimes.




• Vivian and Russell have known that James went back to the Irish Mob clan since James was about 15. You can't keep secrets from Mama Vivian. Any coldness on Russell's side can be attributed to the betrayal by doing that, more so than the question of his birth father.

Ellen's life was in danger while she lived in Bear River - due to the nature of the serial killer investigation and the threat to the Statute. James had been preparing to go to Bear River to find a way to get her home, on their mother's orders, when a different opportunity presented itself.

When the Amari Crime Family fell in NYC, it left a power vacuum in the burrough. The Bailey clan of the Irish Mob, under James' command, swooped in to claim the territory for themselves, and ended up in a turf war with the Kerrigan crime family, who were also attempting to expand into the claim.

They resolved to end the dispute diplomatically - and it was through Kerrigan via Trinity that James learned of the imminent destruction of Bear River. James agreed to secede all territory and claim to the former Amari stronghold to Kerrigan 100%, if they agreed to help him get Ellen out of Bear River by creating a false narrative.

So James is the one who had Ellen vehemently and unceremoniously fired with false documents, while her record remained perfectly intact and squeaky clean. It was a total coincidence that Ellen had actually done the thing she was accused of doing (sharing the case file on the SK) which is why she has yet to realize her record was totally unaffected.

James is a born Esper, with his powers coming from his mysterious father's side of the family.

James has known since he was young about not being Human; Vivian was unaware and Russell was at the time only by virtue of his criminal connections, but by the time James started to manifest his growing powers around the age of 6, Vivian dove headfirst into the supernatural underground and had all of the knowledge and connections a growing Esper boy in a Human family could need.

James was put in touch with all the resources his mother could get her hands on while they lived in Addison, and James enjoyed a robust magical background and time amongst all different species as part of 'after school programs' and the like. (There also wasn't much to do, being in a small town, for a boy like himself.)

It was decided, however, that this information would not under any circumstances be shared with anyone outside of James and his parents - and this included his baby sister. Their father feared what would come of involving her in such things, so they left her out.

As a result of this teaching, James already had his abilities well in hand by the time they moved to New York City - and after getting involved with the Irish Mob and the Bailey clan, his powers exploded in strength and prowess as the clan was able to assist him even further.

James is a particularly powerful Esper thanks to his upbringing and his work in the Mob honing his skills. He has no qualms about using them, and he has been given wards by his clan (both in magical items and runes upon his actual person, there is likely at least one built into the clan sigil tattoo) to prevent others from using powers like his, on him. His mind is shielded from all but the strongest spells, and even those have a difficult time thanks to the training the clan put him through to be able to withstand magical onslaught as well as torture both physical and magical.

I will eventually at some point explain his powers in detail, but here is a short list of things he can do to varying degrees:

Telekinesis, Teleportation, Telepathy, Mind Reading, Pyrokinesis, Shadow Manipulation, Light Manipulation, Astral Projection, Aura Reading, Clairvoyance, Remote Viewing, Morphic Field Manipulation, Psychometry, Radiesthesia.

While James is skilled in all magic types (offense, defense, and even healing) he is still only a man and can be foiled/defeated/thrown off the scent/etc. He's not as omniscient and all-powerful as he likes to think he is, and some powers are weaker than others, or stronger than others, as the case may be.

In addition to the powers above, James also has the following abilities that aren't necessarily all magical in nature:

Cold Reading - James is skilled in the art of cold reading, which is taking in the details of a scene and being able to work backwards to its origins. He also uses his Esper powers to help boost this a bit though through his retrocognition.

Hot Reading - James is equally as skilled in the act of Hot Reading, which is the exact same thing as Cold Reading, only used on a person who is present in the room with him.

General Superhuman boosts - his Esper magic also allows general overall boosts to his physical health, including some minor healing ability (not to the extent of any other creature, but he is extra hardy for a Human), higher strength, higher speed, and higher senses.

While he has no other physical forms thanks to being an Esper, James is good with visual manipulation and illusion magic and can trick others into seeing things that aren't there, changing the things they do see to something else, or tricking them into not seeing something.

It's a strong enough ability that he can do it without active thought, however if he isn't focused the ability is mild at best and doesn't do much to trick another magical creature. He has to really focus and put energy into it for other supes, and even then, it can be seen through or dispelled with some effort from another type of magic.

Ellen is the only one who calls him 'Jimmy'. He HATES the nickname, actually, and she is the only one allowed to use it because Mom said she could when they were kids and she has never called him James ever since. And he wasn't ever allowed to tell her off until it was too late to break the habit. Ellen is unaware of this, as per usual.
