Before the last Cataclysm, Alduin was one of the most highly respected mages and arguably one of the most powerful. He was, however, constantly being blinded by his hatred for many creatures he considered to be lesser than his own. This especially included goblins and their kin, though what exactly caused that hatred is unknown. He did try to eliminate them by any means necessary, but clearly he wasn't successful in that endeavor.

When the Cataclysm struck he did survive, but if he still lives is unknown as he disappeared shortly afterwards. A mage of his talent could still be alive, but unless he chooses to show himself again or someone finds his body it remains a mystery.
