"No… it's not your fault. Sometimes random things make me feel really anxious.." The dragon agreed, hissing in his ear.
"No… it's not your fault. Sometimes random things make me feel really anxious.." The dragon agreed, hissing in his ear.
"Oh, okay, good." She hoped he wasn't saying that to make her feel better. She was terrible at social cues. "So, uh, what are you going to do now?"
"I'm… not sure. I never really have any plans, considering I don't really have anyone to hang out with." Because you have no friends. The dragon added.
"Me neither," Dara admitted. The snake-eel gave a chuckle. "I was going to head over to the bio lab at the university. Do you like science?"
Becca's phone rang. She picked it up. After a moment of speaking rapidly, she she hung up. "I have to go. My grandfather needs me at home."
Jonathan accidentally fell asleep in the park bench, the ever-present starling dormant while its victim slept. So it poked the dirt for any morsels or grubs.
"Okay. It was nice to meet you!" Xander said to Becca before she left.
Becca stood up. "It was nice to meet you too Xander." As she walked towards the entrance of the park, she started getting nervous. Beni grew at each passing thought. Soon she was as big as a sports car, and her beady purple eyes seemed to bore a hole into Becca's back. Beni didn't hurt Becca, exactly. But instead tormented her.
Robin nodded. "I-I find it fascinating, and I retain random facts about it. Like Bromine is Br 35, and Sulfur Hexafluoride is a gas that's six times heavier than air, so when you breathe it your voice gets deeper. Sorry! I'm talking too much, aren't I?"
"No of course not," Dara laughed, "I love science. I'm glad you like it too. Want to see the lab?"
"Er, sure! Are you allowed to bring me in even though I'm not a college student?"
Dara shrugged uncaringly. "Professor Nicholas is really lenient when it comes to me and the lab. He calls it my lab at this point. I spend most of my time there, because it's so calm and quiet and the research is fun. I don't have to talk to anyone but myself." At that she laughed again.
"That's cool. Maybe he'll think I'm a freshman too?" You probably just offended her The dragon whispered in his ear. He tried his best to ignore it and not react.
She nodded. "Probably. Let's go, it'll be fun." The snake-eel seemed to think otherwise. Something about how the kid hated biology and probably was only agreeing because she was stressing him out. She waved the thought away. "It's a minute or two from here. Follow me."
"Okay." Robin walked behind Dara, trying to push the dragon away. She just feels bad for you. She probably tricked you and you'll get in trouble with the college. "Shut up, anxiety. She wouldn't do that.." Robin said under his breath to the dragon. It was hardly audible, so he doubted Dara had heard him. She probably did, and now she's going to ask questions.
She heard Robin mumble something. The snake-eel grew longer, squeezing her chest and whispering right in her ear. Loud. Persuasive. He literally doesn't want to be here. Why are you dragging this scared kid around like this? She almost blurted out that he didn't have to come, but stifled the impulse. So what if he didn't? Wow. You're a jerk. Oh well. The snake-eel squeezed even tighter.
Robin decided to just ignore the dragon to the best of his ability. It noticed this and just got more and more persistent, telling him every little thing he should be worrying about, every little thing that was dangerous or reminded him of the island.
"Okay!" Dara nearly yelled, making them both jump. "Sorry. Um, we're here." She gestured to the biology building and opened the door. "Right this way. I guess I can show you some of my research. If you want to see it."
"Yeah, sure! What do you research?" Robin followed Dara inside, looking around in wonder. He had never been in an actual lab before.
"I'm researching the effects of gene therapy on frogs," She responded. "Nothing too major. Just observing, really. It's a drawn out process. I've watched several generations of frogs now. Seeing how the genetic manipulation transferred from parent to offspring. It's…Oh, feel free to shut me up if i'm rambling," she quickly stopped.
"No, I like listening! It's a good way to learn. A lot of people don't even notice that I'm there sometimes, even if I'm standing with their group. I guess I'd be a good spy?"
Dara just smiled, almost flattered. Most people told her to shut up within moments of her opening her mouth. This was…nice. "Well, okay. Um, if you come over here you can see the frogs. You like animals, right?"
"Definitely. Sometimes I feel like they pay attention more than most people. Some people call me a Disney princess because animals follow me around." Or because they think you're gay. 'What? No one thinks I'm gay!' Robin thought towards the dragon. 'It's just a metaphor!'
"Aww even my cold heart can admit that's cute," Dara joked, reaching down into the frog's habitat and pulling out one. "This is Daso. I named him after my brother because when my brother annoys me I can poke his frog angrily."
(Ha, it's funny because his brother is gay lmao)
"Can I touch him?" Robin looked at the frog curiously. They didn't live near his house, so he only really ever saw frogs at the dog park pond.
