@KoffeeOwl
Once, there were four people who were made to represent plague, famine, death, and war. These people quickly became known as The Great Four and could often be found together. It was once common knowledge that each of these people could morph into certain animals; Death was an owl, Famine was a sphynx cat, Plague was a mouse, and War was a bear. Now, however, the Great Four have been re-incarnated and long forgotten. Though most of them are (most likely) aware of their special abilities, most others are oblivious to this fact. In addition, it is becoming a rumor that creatures such as elves and forest spirits are appearing.
Information on the Great Four- Each of them is able to morph into the animal specified above, while some may not relate this to them being the new incarnations of one of the old Great Four. Typically, where one of the Great Four goes, something bad will happen to those around them, with no exceptions as to who the person is (aside from themselves). These events, however, do have limitations and do not always happen. One of these limitations is that the incarnation themselves will never be harmed by this event, as they are the one who caused it.
If one specific incarnation were to be killed, they would simply re-incarnate in the form of a newborn child somewhere in the world.
Information on Other Magical Human-like Beings- In the case of elves, forest spirits, etc., they are part of the small remaining magical community. This community is made up of those who are not entirely human and dates back to early 1200. Those who are born into a magical family are aware of the Great Four, as well as the rising rumors that they have come back. Since the magical community has declined in such large numbers since the 1800s, many of them learn to live life as an ordinary person would. With the exception being, of course, that they have to be careful of showing any revealing features.
For example, elves have to mind their ears and beings such as forest spirits (used) to have to explain away their odd hair and skin tones. In recent years this issue has become less pronounced since tattoos and hair dye are common.
Information on Humans- Seeing as they are the most abundant in the way of species similar to them, humans have very little to worry about in terms of the Great Four. Some may know of them, but little believe they ever existed, much less that they have returned. However, many humans seem to believe in some type of magical creature, even if it is in the slightest, making it somewhat difficult for those who are in the magical community.
