"Not as beautiful as me –err, you." Daso mentally face-palmed. Now she was going to think he was a huge jerk. He scrambled to salvage what was left of his dignity. "I mean, it's fine. But the –it's got barnacles. All over. It."
"Not as beautiful as me –err, you." Daso mentally face-palmed. Now she was going to think he was a huge jerk. He scrambled to salvage what was left of his dignity. "I mean, it's fine. But the –it's got barnacles. All over. It."
"Very observant of you," She replied.
"I'm going to get the barnacles off of it."
She looked at the locket again. How was she going to get the barnacles off?
Daso watched her think for a long moment. Finally, he remembered something. "I think you're supposed to use a…um…knife? Maybe? And then something scrubby."
She glanced at him in surprise. He actually said something useful!
"Thank you," Jaylen replied.
"I'll be sure to use a knife."
Daso grinned, his face dimpling. "My uncle –well, not really my uncle, my friend– taught me that. He lives around here."
She smiled.
"Cool! Is he like a friend of your family?"
"Nah," Daso shrugged, suddenly uncomfortable. "It's more like we're coworkers." His face brightened again. "He could probably get your locket clean no problem! Wanna come with me to his place?"
Jaylen was unsure of how to proceed. Should she really go somewhere with this strange boy who had been flirting with her? But she really wanted to get the locket clean.
"Okay," She replied.
"Where does he live?"
"He's a couple minutes from here." Daso noticed her apprehension, waving it away with a quick, "It's perfectly safe, I swear." He realized how suspicious that sounded, but he wasn't sure of a better way to put it. "You don't have to…of course."
"No, I'd like to," Jaylen replied.
"Let's go."
"Alright!" The two of them walk from the beach for a few minutes in near silence. They reach a small beach house. It's not in the best part of town, but it doesn't seem to dangerous. Daso takes the lead, striding to the door and knocking. A middle-eastern man with a buzzcut and a scar on his face answers the door. "Hi, Reos," Daso gushes.
Jaylen stared at the stranger. He looked a bit menacing, but if Daso said he was okay, she guessed she believed him. What was wrong with her? Why did she trust this boy she didn't even know?
"Hello," She said quietly.
Reos regarded her quietly for a while. His broad shoulders, military cargo pants, and muscular build loomed over her. Then, his face broke into a smile she could only describe as motherly. "Aww! Daso, you've brought over a girl?" He clapped his hands. "For all your flirting, you never manage to actually snag one. But here she is, and she's lovely."
Daso desperately waved his hands. "Nononono stop it's not like that. We just…we–"
Jaylen blushed furiously. Her fear towards this man was completely gone. She giggled nervously.
"I'm not his girlfriend."
Reos looked disappointed but not surprised. "Ah, of course. The kid's a flirt who's too shy to actually get the girl." He lifted his eyebrows. "Or guy. Or anyone. He'd flirt with a chair unless the chair started to show interest."

Jaylen stared at Daso.
Was he really shy when it came to girls? He didn't seem too shy.
"So, um, Reos," She said,
"Could you help me?"
She showed him the locket.
"I want to get the barnacles off of it."
"Oh, sure I can." Reos placed his hands on his hips. "How rude of me. Come on in, you two." The two of them followed him inside.
Can I join in?
Yep
Jaylen followed him inside to a table. The table was covered with tools and old pieces of junk.
"What's all this?" She asked.
(shit can I still join????)
"Oh you know, just bits and pieces." Reos grinned. "It's a good hobby. Helps with the…" his face grew dark. "Never mind." He rummaged around his stuff, his back to them.
Daso turned to Jaylen. "Sorry about him," he managed, trying to sound suave, "he's… an idiot."
