(Gonna skip Fane for now because I'm getting ready to do stuff)
Mercedes tilted her head when more and made a heart shape over her chest, then cracked it in two.
(Gonna skip Fane for now because I'm getting ready to do stuff)
Mercedes tilted her head when more and made a heart shape over her chest, then cracked it in two.
"She did not give a straight-forward response," he said, rubbing his chin. "She only said she was fond of me."
Mercedes pursed her lips and rummaged around for a piece of paper to write on. Once she found it, she quickly wrote down something and turned it around for Anto to see. "She has a hard time with relationships, friend or otherwise. She is likely confused."
"Well….how do I get through to her, then?" While his feelings were nowhere near as confusing, flirting wasn't his strong suit.
She flipped the page, scribbled something, then turned the paper around again. "From what I've seen, she already has feelings for.you. It's a matter of her understanding them. Catch her when she's vulnerable, when you're alone together. Ask but don't push."
He frowned as he read the paper. "I doubt it will be any time tonight. Parris has her showing the new guys around."
Instead of writing, she set the paper down and pounded her fist against her palm, then pointed to the ticking clock in their room. Make time. She loved her best friend dearly, and she wanted to see her happy—and from what she's seen, she was happy around Anto. She let her guard down around him. She spent her limited free time with him instead of by herself to wind down. They both seemed to have a sort of…glow…about them whenever they were around each other.
"I….suppose you are right," he said, getting up to his feet and wincing. "Afterwords, I think you should check my legs. They are hurting quite a lot."
She stood up with him and yanked him back by the back of his shirt, making him sit down again with a stern look. She wasn't letting him go if his legs were hurting, no matter how cute she thought him and Fane were.
"Why does everyone do that?" He asked, crossing his arms and pouting slightly.
She rose a brow and gave him a look. Everyone? she seemed to be saying, then grabbed a stool and pulled it up to him, tapping his legs in question.
"It's the knees," he said, pulling his pant legs up to show his knees. They were both red and puffy-looking, but nothing was broken, and none of the stitches had popped.
Mercedes tilted her head and examined them, tapping his knees here and there to see if they hurt whenever she tapped them.
He shook his head. "They only hurt when I put weight on them. Are they just sore?"
Mercedes pursed her lips, reaching up to run her thumb over her bottom lip in thought. She held up a finger in a wait a second gesture, then stood up and looked around for something. She eventually found a bucket of ice that Fane had brought for a bottle of wine—which was now empty—and a towel, then came back over to Anto. She put some ice into the towel and pressed it against his one knee, showing him what she wanted him to do.
He nodded, holding the ice against his knee and letting out a relieved sigh. "Well, since I can't walk, would you mind getting her for me?"
Mercedes nodded and stood, then patted his shoulder as she passed him. She meandered through the ship in search of her best friend, biting her lip to hide her grin.
"Anyways," Hugh said after the introductions were made, his deep voice seeming to rattle the floor beneath them. "Where are we gonna be staying?"
Fane pointed towards where the cabins were located. "Over there. There isn't room for each of you to have your own room, so I suggest pairing up with someone you can stand."
Johnnie pointed at the sharpshooter. "Not him."
He gave her a grin. "Don't sneak up on me next time."
"I'll bunk with the girl," Hugh said.
"It's what I do, sharpshooter," the thief said and flicked her hair over her shoulder, then looked to Hugh and nodded. "Works for me. Just don't sit on me."
Fane listened while they discussed, then turned when she felt a finger tapping her shoulder. "Oh, Mercedes." The doctor flashed some signs with her hands, then pointed towards the cabins. Fane pinched her lips together, then turned to the group. "Do you lot think you can handle the rest on your own?"
"I'll keep 'em outta trouble!" White said, giving Fane a grin that told her that he'd most likely be causing the trouble if their was any.
"We'll be fine," Hugh assured. Out of them all, he looked the most responsible.
"Alright." She cast a wary look over at White, not liking that grin, but turned around and followed Mercedes to the cabins, wondering what she wanted.
Anto had switched the towel over to his other knee, and his foot was tapping at a mile a minute. He was beyond nervous about the conversation he and his first mate were about to have.
Mercedes left Fane once they made it close to Anto's and Mercedes's cabin. The first mate looked at her in confusion as she walked away, then curiously wandered into the cabin and looked down at Anto, shutting the door behind her. "Hi."
