(What about Caelen?)
(What about Caelen?)
( Caelin is Mr.HeeHaw
Jess is Cthulu because Valerie thinks he's kinda scary.)
(Yeah I guess hes scary XD)
Jess turned back to Nina and sat down “well patch me up doc” he smiled at her, faking his confidence
(Sorry its short)
.
(I'm sorry I had to go to bed T.T)
Nina returned the smile with an equal amount of good-cheer-pulled-from-thin-air. "Patching up is now in progress." She pulled out the surgery kit and was relieved to see that all the tools were still there and usable. "Hold very still, okay? I unfortunately don't have any numbing agent right now, so this will hurt, but probably not as bad as getting the wound in the first place." She'd never stitched up a real patient before, but she'd had lots of practice in mockup situations and felt as ready as she could be. "If you feel like you have to flinch, just warn me ahead of time so I don't stab you or break the thread."
He straightened his posture up, acting oh so confident. "Pfft, like the bite even hurt" he laughed. Rolled his eyes and sat down. He was nervous, but did he show that? Uhm maybe a little bit but he didnt think he did.
"I'll tell you. But I wont have to, just sayin" he crossed his arms trying to brush away any past weaknesses anyone saw earlier.
"I'm sure you'll be able to handle it," Nina agreed brightly, taking the opportunity to practice her bedside manner. She could see that he was at least slightly nervous, but didn't comment. Taking the needle in one hand and pincers in the other, she deftly anchored the thread at the top of the gash, trying to work as quickly as she could while still being gentle. "So, how exactly did you get hurt? Was it in town? I think you mentioned you haven't been here long."
He eyed the needle with wide eyes, the green painfully prominent in his eyes.
Once the needle poked his skin, he didnt feel anything until she pulled the thread through. Biting his bottom lip hard as well as squeezing his fist "damn what the hell?" He says letting out a breath. Nope, he didnt like this at all
Nina noticed him tense up and glanced at him apologetically. "Sorry, I promise this won't take long. As soon as I get the chance to go scavenging again, I'm going to try and find something to numb the skin so we don't have to do this so painfully. If it helps, you don't have to watch while I do this–it is pretty creepy to look at."
"Nah it's fine. I mean you can numb it if you want. But I don't feel a think" he says, whilst wincing in pain. "Nope, nothing" he proceeded to tell her.
"Pfft, I can take care. It's less creepy than those screamers out there. I can deal with this" he chuckled
"Well I'm glad this isn't bothering you too much," Nina said with a knowing (but not patronizing) smile, now almost half-way done. To further distract him, she decided to change the subject a bit. "So, what do you think of this group we're suddenly part of? They all seem nice so far, to me…..do you think it would be a good idea to stick with them?"
He raised his dark eyebrows a bit before speaking “well i like them. They seem cool” Jez shrugged.
“So, if you were to leave the group but take one with you, who would it be huh?” He asked with a smile, basically asking her who her favorite was
(I gotta work today so I won't be on much, fair warning)
Nina thought for a minute, trying to decide whether to choose based on practicality or personality. "Well….Caelen seems to have plenty of supplies and know the area…..but Valerie also seems capable and nice to be around….and you too of course, you seem like a great fighter and I do like to hang out with people who don't let the bad times get them down." She grinned ruefully, finishing off her work and deftly knotting the surgical thread. "I guess I'm too indecisive to choose. Okay, all done! Hold still while I find some bandage to protect the stitches."
He listened carefully, thinking about what she said, and before he knew it, she was finished stitching him up.
"Well, sounds like I'm your favorite obviously" he says with a flirtatious smirk.
The words played in his head over and over again
"who dont let the bad times get them down"
Was that him? Or did he choose not to show it? He would like to think that was him. Ignoring the bad things that happen to him. But in reality, hes the one crying at the end of the day.
"So, did you do this a lot before this?" He asked, trying to distract himself from his thoughts.
Wasnt it a normal thing to do? Distract oneself from their bad thoughts so they can move forward?
In this place and time, his feelings…they werent important
(sorry for the wait)
Nina heard him try to flirt with her for a second time and did her best to pretend he'd said nothing. She wasn't upset by it—she just had no idea how to respond since she'd never received that kind of attention before.
Not wanting to seem like she'd brushed him off, she listened to his next question and answered readily. "Minor surgery, you mean? Not really, only in a classroom. It wasn't as scary or difficult to do in real life as I was expecting, though. I just hope I can find more textbooks somewhere so I can keep learning and getting better." After a minute, she added, "What about you? Did you learn to fight before or after everything happened?"
He noticed her reaction to his flirting. Or well…..lack thereof. Though not knowing whether it made her annoyed, uncomfortable, or just shocked, he decided he would keep testing the waters.
But not now, he didnt want her to mess up on his leg and him having to get more stitches.
Jess didnt know how this stuff worked though, so he didnt want her to get mad at him for being annoying. Any other time he would expect her to be hitting him upside the head or receiving a slap in the face.
“I knew how to fight before this. My dad taught me before he died” he says nonchalantly.
“I was constantly in trouble with the police, street fighting and a lot of illegal boxing. But because I’m under 18, theyve got nothin on me” he says with a smile
Nina raised her eyebrows slightly after hearing that Jess had been involved in illegal business, but she supposed none of that mattered anymore since the country had fallen apart. Besides, he still seemed like a decent person, and his skills were certainly coming in handy now.
"I bet the police don't have anything on anyone these days," she remarked, wrapping Jess's leg in bandage and sitting back to collect her tools. "I'm sorry about your father…..do you have any other surviving family? My little brother and parents are…..somewhere out there, I just don't know where."
Jez chuckled at her reaction to his illegal business “dont worry, I’m a good dude. I don’t bite unless you ask me too” he joked, though regretting it soon after.
He truly was a good guy with good intentions. The only reason he got into street fights and illegal boxing was well…. reasons he didnt want to talk about.
He soon replied to her other comments highheartedly. “Thats fine, he was a cool dude. Shame to see him go, but hes in a better place right now” he says with a smile that immediately went away and froze into more of a shocked look for a split second.
His mother and his little brother were dead. But Jacklin……shes in that lab. He wasnt going to tell her about it though. He didnt want any more people knowing. He knew though that soon they would ask questions while going to the lab. Why he was so determined to get there.
Would he tell them its just because of the reapers and the mystery behind them? He wanted answers just like them? Or would he tell them about his sister? He didnt want them to pity him or feel bad.
But he was sure he wasnt the only one keeping secrets.
He didnt dare fully trust any one of these people, Nomatter how much he wanted to. He doesn’t know their lives, nor who they were before this. Could they be fooling him? Could they have a deeper motive?
He just didnt know
Jezariah snapped back into reality and out of his churning thoughts and looked back at Nina.
“Nah, i dont know where by family is. But I’m sure we’ll find them. Your family too.” He says leaning forward and ruffling her hair with a kind smile
She smiled and ducked away, recognizing too late that she'd brushed on a touchy subject and not wanting to push her luck. "You're right. We'll find them, and go home. Or, if our homes don't exist anymore, I guess we could always build new homes somewhere safe. And maybe we'll find a cure for Screamers, or….something, and we won't have to worry about them anymore either." She was only partly forcing herself to stay positive–it was in her nature to see a bright future and believe in the best possible outcomes. It made her feel a pang to see how Jess was obviously trying to hide his own worries and misery, and she hoped that by staying positive herself, she could help him forge onward at the very least.
"Shall we go find something to eat?" she suggested, tying back her hair more neatly. "I'm starving."
(gotta go to bed, seeya tomorrow!)
(Okay see ya!)
He read her expressions and admired how positive she stayed, not knowing what lay deeper in her mind.
Did everyone hide such emotions all the time? Jess wasnt really used to being around people even before this apocalypse happened. He was very shut in, only having about three friends that always got into trouble. Nothin exciting going on in his life other than boxing and getting in trouble with the police.
Hopefully he would be able to trust these people and become friends with them. He didnt even think about romance in a time like this. But it was also possible.
Whether he believed it or not, he would come to trust them and hopefully they would trust him.
The guilt of keeping his secret was only going to weigh him down more even if he didnt know it.
When he tells them…will he lose their trust? Or will they trust him more?
Once again he had to shake himself out of his thoughts as he stood.
“Yeah sure lets do that” he says with a nod and limping to the other room. He could walk and run on it like he did before, it just hurt like all hell.
But he was in an environment where he was safe. For now. So there was no need to run through the pain.
Jess didnt know how long they were going to be able to stay here safely.
He stepped into the kitchen and nodded at everyone else with a smile. “Hey, there anything to eat in here?”

(I've been following, just not commenting since no one is talking to Valerie, sorry.)
(Write, add in a burst of action, Calen is on the roof essentially on watch, but I'm not sure what else to have him do)
(Thats fine! Sorry i just didnt want this to turn into a one on one!)
Valerie shrugged, "Caelin put some food in there awhile ago, I only have a few energy bars left. In all honesty, you should go ask him, I think he's on the roof." She proceeded to toss her wrappers into her backpack, now very unsure, waiting anxiously to see what would happen next. She was now stuck with strangers she barely knew, there was a real chance that she could be cast out. Should she stay or should she go?
