"Neither." She held her breath for a second, before releasing slowly. "I guess my parents didn't like animals much."
"Neither." She held her breath for a second, before releasing slowly. "I guess my parents didn't like animals much."
Lucian nodded his head in understanding. “Yeah, same with mine.”
"Do you have a pet now?" Morrigan asked, surprised at how relaxed she was slowly becoming. She supposed that the topic of the conversation was helping, nothing too out of the ordinary or personal, easy to stay calm throughout.
Lucian shook his head at that. “No. I want to get a puppy or something at some point, though,” he hummed, a small smile on his lips.
"What kind?" Propping her elbows up on the table, Morrigan leaned forward to rest her face in her hands, hair spilling over her shoulders as she tried to assume a more casual position.
Lucian shrugged his shoulders at that. “Not sure. I’m not going to buy from a breeder. I’ll probably get one from a pound or something like that,” he said. “So I guess it depends on what’s there.”
"Right," she nodded, giving herself a surprisingly gentle reminder to breathe.
Lucian smiled a bit at that. “Don’t know when then. I guess when I have time to take care of a puppy, actually,” he chuckled.
"Maybe after you graduate?" she suggested, biting down on her lip until she felt a spike of pain– something to keep her anchored in the present.
“That’s what I was thinking,” Lucian hummed with a nod of his head. “Do you think you’ll get a pet later in life?”
"I hope so," Morrigan replied truthfully, swinging her legs to get rid of the trapped nervous energy. "A dog would be nice, I like pit bulls."
Lucian smiled at that. “Ah, that’s a good choice,” he commented.
She gave a tiny shrug. "They're misunderstood. Really sweet once you get to know them."
Lucian nodded his head in agreement. “M’hm. It’s all in the owner,” he hummed.
"Agreed." Perhaps she was too quick to nod– after all, in the back of her head, she replaced the dog, and her father the owner– but she continued anyways. "Pitbulls who have turned out violently, or even overly timid, have usually been abused at some point." She reddened slightly upon realizing two things: the first being that she was rambling, and the second being that it was quite obvious that there was a double meaning to her statement, one she hadn't even been aware of until now. You're getting sloppy..
Lucian nodded at that. “The owners should be taking good care of pets. But there are bad owners too often,” he said, eyes briefly flicking to her scars.
Morrigan’s shoulders tensed, her eyes following Lucian’s down to the jagged scar running across her wrist. “Yeah.” It was said more quietly than it should have been.
Lucian knew that seemed to trigger something. Had Morrigan been abused? Just the thought of that made him angry. How could someone do that to her? He rubbed at his jaw a bit and pushed the thoughts away for now. “Anyways. I’m glad we decided to give this a second chance,” he hummed.
“So am I.” The response, so automatic in her mind, rolled off the tongue easily, convincingly. But for once, she was beginning to think that maybe— just a little bit— she was glad.
Lucian smiled at Morrigan. “And I’d love to meet up again, if you would like,” he offered.
And just like that, the feeling evaporated, leaving behind only the sense that she wa walking into a trap, backing herself into a corner. But she nodded, smile never wavering. “Sounds good by me.”
“When are you free next?” Lucian asked, arching a brow as he ran over his schedule in his head.
“I’m free….” She was free the day after tomorrow, but needed more time to clear her thoughts. Much more time, but she’d have to make do. “Does Wednesday work for you?” Five days.. it would have to be enough.
“Wednesday should work,” Lucian said slowly, nodding to himself. “What should we do? We could see a movie, if there are any out,” he suggested. Morrigan seemed to get nervous when speaking, so maybe that would be a good date idea.
Oh thank god. An option where she didn’t have to speak as much. An option where she didn’t have to be constantly terror of slipping up. “That- That sounds great. What movies are on?”
