Marla’s smile fell clean off her face for a split second, the blood draining from her face when she realized how horribly she’d slipped up. “Y-Yeah. Yeah.”

Marla’s smile fell clean off her face for a split second, the blood draining from her face when she realized how horribly she’d slipped up. “Y-Yeah. Yeah.”
Gwen froze in place upon seeing this reaction. What did I do? What did I do?! She internally began to panic. “Are you feeling okay? Do you want to sit? We can sit? It’s fine, we have time!”
“N-No— it’s fine— really, you didn’t do anything.” She didn’t notice. Marla smiled weakly, her shoulders sagging with relief. “I just— messed up without realizing.”
“You’re literally standing in my mess of a room, don’t worry about it.” Gwen slouched a bit, some of the tension in her body fading once she realized she hadn’t completely screwed everything up. “Let’s get out of here, actually. I’m starting to feel bad about myself.”
“Yeah, sure.” Marla swallowed, unable to scrub her mind clean of the image of a woman standing on the very edge of a bridge. “Why- Why do you feel bad?”
Gwen cracked a grin. “Because I have so few friends that I’m actually just dragging you around everywhere.” She rubbed her arm, feeling a bit self conscious.
(That’s a whole mood right there)
Standing, Marla gave a slightly shaky shrug, swallowing. “It’s fine, I don’t have many friends either. Where are we going?”
Gwen shrugged as well. “Your choice this time.” She smiled warmly. “Do you want me to call a doctor or something? You uh… you look a little shaken up.”
“Oh it’s fine— I’m fine. Sorry.” Maria quickly averted her eyes, pretending to be deeply in thought. “Uh, have you ever been to the top of the South Side?”
Gwen shook her head, now slightly curious. “What’s up there?”
“It’s this really big lake, beautiful too. There are huge steppingstones running all the way across in a sort of interlocking pattern…” Makra trailed off. “Come on, why don’t I just show you? We can feed the swans.”
“We have swans?” Gwen was already one hundred percent on board with this new plan.
(Gwen is meeeee)
“Yeah— you didn’t know?” Finally regaining what little confidence she’d had before her slip-up, Marla grinned. “C’mon, I’ll show you.”
Gwen broke into a wide smile. “You think we’ll have time before class?” She fretted nervously, looking at Marla.
(Lol should we move class to like two hours ahead just to give them gaytime)
(I’m all for that lmao)
(XD)
“Yeah— we’ve got plenty.” Marla featured towards the door. “Shall we?”
Gwen nodded, walking out. She did her best to disguise the spring in her step. “I’ve never seen a swan up close before. From far away, yeah, but to feed one! Is that allowed? I feel like it’s some hidden secret thing.”
Marla could practically feel her mood skyrocket along with Gwen’s excitement. She grinned, removing the two elastic bands in her hair and slipping them both onto her wrist. “Yeah, it’s allowed, people do it all the time.”
“I can’t believe I never knew this.” Gwen shook her head with wonder. “I feel very blessed and very lied to right now.” She admitted, unable to hide her grin.
“Well, I didn’t know about the wonders of Treetop until now,” she replied with an amused smile. “But I get what you mean.”
“It’s a whole new world.” Gwen exaggerated. “I feel just like a Disney Princess. Magic flowers, bam. Talking animals? There’s like three pigeons who tolerate me, so close enough. I’m lacking in the dress department though.” She frowned.
Marla laughed for the third time that day— what was happening to her? She was relaxed, smiling causally, cracking jokes. AKA, not acting like her usual self at all. “I can identify with what you’re saying here.”
Geen smiled, relieved to have gotten a good reaction. “We can do that next time. Ballgown shopping.” She laughed, trying to imagine the situation. “I’ll be totally useless, but I’m up for the challenge.”
Marla snorted. “I’d never wear it, just hide in my room the whole day and admire it.”
