“No. It’s—“ Marla slid off the bed and onto her knees, lifting her mattress with trembling hands and withdrawing a dusty, purple velvet pouch.
“No. It’s—“ Marla slid off the bed and onto her knees, lifting her mattress with trembling hands and withdrawing a dusty, purple velvet pouch.
Gwen sat down on the floor next to Marla, her hands shaking almost violently. “Marla? What is that?”
Marla nearly ripped the pouch in her haste to get the jewelled cards out. “It’s—It’s my mother’s deck. I—I drew Death a few weeks ago. There was a vision. But I thought it was for me, not—“
Gwen stared in shock at the cards. “You couldn’t have known, Princess.” She assured her girlfriend. “There’s no way.”
“But—I—“ A card slipped from the deck, and without thinking, Marla picked it up and turned it over in her palm.
The unforgiving face of Death stared back up at her.
Gwen pulled Marla into a hug immediately. “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“It was—It was before the sleepover—“ she choked out, shoving the cards back into their pouch. “And now—Now Chelsea is—“
“I know, I know.” Gwen couldn’t bear to let go of Marla. “It’s not your fault, understand? But I think you should talk to your professor about this.”
Macha’s eyes went round with horror. “No,” she breathed, “This is an illegal deck. They’ll destroy it. But I’m bound to it—it’ll kill me too.”
“You’re bound to it? I… I don’t understand?” Gwen rubbed Marla’s back, trying to wrap her head around the situation. “And an illegal deck… what?”
"It's one of the old ones–It's a long story." Marla shoved the cursed deck beneath her mattress and got unsteadily to her feet,
“This is insane, right?” Gwen rubbed her forehead, still sitting on the ground.
"Y-Yeah," she whispered, wiping her eyes. "And it's my fault…." Suddenly, an idea entered her mind. "I–I should burn them. So nothing happens to anyone else."
“No, Marla.” Gwen shook her head. “I’m not letting anything happen to you. We’ll get through this together. Is there any way to unbind you from the deck?”
"Death," Marla replied shortly. "Or I just keep drawing cards."
“Cards it is.” Gwen sighed. “You’re not alone anymore Marla. We can handle this.”
"I disagree.." she said quietly. "If I keep drawing cards……. I can't do that."
“Marla, please.” Gwen looked up at her girlfriend, chewing her lower lip. “I can’t lose you.”
"We'll discus this later," Marla whispered, averting her eyes. "Do you want to use the shower first?"
“No, no. Princess, you should first. Take your time.” Gwen insisted, giving Marla’s hand a squeeze.
Marla nodded miserable and drifted towards the bathroom door, swallowing another choked sob.
Chelsea…
Gwen sat down on Marla’s bed, still too shocked to process what just happened. She could hardly think at the moment. It was too much to take in all at once.
Marla stood in the shower, eyes closer as the cold water ran over her pale skin, washing it clean of crimson, wiping her conscience clear of dark secrets, if only for a moment.
Gwen flopped onto Marla’s bed, staring up at the ceiling in a daze.
