"I'll give you unlimited snacks from the pantry for a month if you do," Maya bribed.
"I'll give you unlimited snacks from the pantry for a month if you do," Maya bribed.
Maxwell shook his head.
"Sorry," he said "but no, Janix already gives me snacks you steal on your night time pantry raids anyway."
Maya groaned in frustration. "Have I not proven to be a trustworthy friend over the years? Please just tell me," she practically begged.
Maxwell shook his head and Aspen lowered Maya to the ground, picking herself up and floating all the way to the ceiling.
"What about me?" She asked and Maxwell smiled. "I'm Janix's roommate after all."
Maxwell sighed and whispered something in Aspen's ear.
"What did he say?" Maya called up eagerly, slightly annoyed at being the only one on the ground.
Aspen smiled.
"He told me I cannot tell you," she said, floating back to the ground. "He made me promise."
Maya gaped at her in shock. "Traitor," she said, looking wounded. "We were in thjs together! How could you?"
Aspen laughed "well, he chose to tell me so—" she said awkwardly and smiled lightly.
"Fine, I see how it is," Maya sniffed, turning away from the two of them. "I'm going to go hang out with River, since he trusts me."
Aspen stared at her and Maxwell called "Don't worry, she's always overdramatic."
Maya flipped him off as she left, but she was smiling playfully as she did so, inwardly groaning at the amount of stairs she now had to climb down.
Maxwell floated down and hovered a foot from the ground.
"Hello, I'm Maxwell, call me Max." He said, sticking out his hand, Aspen barely had to lift her arm to read his handshake.
"Hi, im Aspen." She said shyly, he was a lot like Janix had described him and was bashfully handsome.
"Will you tell the boy you came with to come visit me sometime?" Max asked, tilting his head to the side.
Aspen nodded and waved a small goodbye as she headed for the door, where she saw Maya gloomily staring at the staircase.
"You sure you can't tell me?" Maya asked Aspen hopefully. "And can you carry me downstairs please?"
Aspen hesitated.
"No," she said, beginning to walk down the stairs "no to both."
Maya grumbled something under her breath before groaning really loudly and walking off the edge of the top step, free-falling towards the bottom of the spiral stairs. She thrusted her hand out and a large illusion pillow appeared at the bottom of the stone stairs, ready to catch her.
Aspen kept going down the stairs, meeting Maya at the bottom.
"Was that really so much work?" She asked
"Yes, actually," Maya sighed, her forehead glistening with sweat. "Making illusions that are actually able to be touched or used, like the boulder camouflaging the entrance to the loop, takes a crap ton of energy out of me. That's why I chose to live near the kitchens."
Aspen nodded.
"Floating things makes me tired too, though not as much as you, i'm sure." She told Maya.
Maya shrugged. "Well, it's different for every peculiar. Some people don't feel exhuasted at all from using their abilities."
She smiled at Aspen. "I'm going to go devour some of my snacks now. Do you want to come with, or do you want to go back to the library?"
Aspen smiled.
"I think I'll see if River's still in the library." She said, waving and walking back towards the library, opening the door, she looked around and spotted River, reading a book at one of the large tables, a tall stack of more books next to him.
"Hey," she said to him, as she pulled out the chair next to him and sat down.
River glanced up and smiled when he saw Aspen.
"Hey," he said back, putting a bookmark in the page he was on before closing the novel. "Did you manage to find Maxwell?"
Aspen smiled at him.
"Yes," She said slyly "and I obtained the information we went for."
"Maya must be pleased," River chuckled.
Aspen smiled.
"I didn't tell." She said slyly "Maxwell told me not to."
River grinned back at her. "That must explain why she's not here with you."
