“I’m going to warn you now,” Janie started, helping Arria lie down on the bed like contraption so he was more comfortable, “The process is going to be painful, regrowing parts always is.”
“I’m going to warn you now,” Janie started, helping Arria lie down on the bed like contraption so he was more comfortable, “The process is going to be painful, regrowing parts always is.”
“Oh,” Carter bit his lip, “It doesn’t matter. It’ll be worth it.” Carter said, though he still was a bit unsure. But there wasn’t a chance he wouldn’t do it. Maybe if he’d had his full tail, he would’ve been faster when Yuri’s guards had caught them. Maybe they could’ve gotten away. It was in the past, but he certainly wouldn’t take the chance again, since Fate decided to continue to throw bad luck at them. Besides, he wanted to be able to be whole again.
“The upside is that it is a relatively quick process.” The mermaid smiled, packing up her things, “Come on.” She inclined her head, motioning for Carter to follow her as she started swimming.
Carter followed close behind, wringing his hands in anxiousness. He glanced down at his half tail. Soon it would be whole, soon Arria would be healed. Soon everything g would be okay.
The swim out of the city wasn’t extremely long but long ebeough to be tiring for the both of them. Soon a small, cottage like house came into view, the aura and vibe of the place being welcoming and calm. Janie swam up to the door, knocking.
Carter held his breath, staring at the door. He definitely was tried from the swim, on top of everything else that happened, but it would be worth it. Carter wrung his hands as he counted the seconds to distract himself.
Soon, an old merman opened the door, his grey beard swaying with the movement, he smiled warmly at the two of them, “Hello again Janie, and whinmight you be young man?”
“My name’s Carter,” He introduced himself, a bit nervous, giving a small smile back. He wasn’t sure what to say, how to ask for this man to just grow his foot and half of his tail back.
"My names Ker, nice to meet you Carter," He replied. Luckily or Carter, Janie spoke up to explain why they were here.
"Ker, we were wondering if you could help Carter. He currently only has half a tail… and one foot when he's human."
The merman's eyes widened, "Triton's beard! You're human?"
“Yes,” Carter told him sheepishly, “I took a potion to be able to come down here.” Carter looked down at his half tail, “Do you think you’d still be able to help me?”
"Oh yes, of course I can. Come in, come in." He motioned for them to come inside, holding the door open for them both.
Carter swam in Ker’s home as he said, “Thank you so much.” He’d finally be back to normal. Carter could finally wash away those nasty memories or what had happened to him and Arria.
“Oh don’t mention it young man,” The old man winked, heading into a back room and coming out with a bunch of different ingredients and bottles, “I met a human once in a similar situation. Only she lost more of her fun and leg then you.”
“Wait… did she come down here? In the ocean?” Carter asked curiously. He had thought he was the only one who knew about merpeople. Just how many others know about them?
Ker nodded, through bits and pieces into a pot, "Yes, she did. Not for long but… she was a friend, and I got here into trouble. she's the entire reason I do what I do now."
“It’s very kind of you, to work to help people.” Carter said softly. It kinda sounded like him and Arria. How Carter had gotten Arria into trouble when he took him on land and that crazy lady had kidnapped them… “Do you think that humans and merpeople should know about each other?”
Ker took a moment to think, the slightest frown in his face, “I guess it depends on many things. Whether humans will kill us, whether merfolk will accept them and the ones that aren’t horrible.”
“Yeah,” Carter agreed, lost in thought. There were definitely bad humans and merpeople alike. He glanced down at his half tail. He needed to get it fixed, because he knew that he was only an anchor when he was like this, and if they ever ran into any more trouble… it would probably be his fault if he didn’t take this opportunity.
Ker went silent for a while, mixing whatever was in the pot. Eventually, he poured a decent amount into a cup, turning around and handing it to Carter, “Here. It’s going to be painful for a little while but once it’s been regrown you’ll be fine, no after pain.”
Carter took the cup. Staring at it for a few second before he took a deep breath. Then he tipped the cup up and let the liquid drain down his throat. At first there was nothing but a light tingle. Then pain exploded at the end of his tail and Carter made a small, pained noise in surprise. He could hardly think straight. The pain pulsed through him and he clenched his teeth, wrapping his arms around himself as he prayed the pain would end soon. Tears pricked at his eyes as he counted the seconds for what seemed like an eternity.
Then, the tail started to reform. The scales and skin at the end of of fin started to slowly grow back to its original shape and colour. Even though it might have felt like forever, the process was completed in only a few minutes and soon, the entire tail was back to normal.
Carter felt the pain subside, and he finally caught his breath. He closed his eyes, taking a moment to regain his composure. And then slowly, he peaked open one eye and looked down nervously. He gasped, “It- It worked!” There was his tail, full and feeling fine. Joy leaked into him quickly, a smile growing on his face. “It worked,” He breathed, his eyes full of awe.
Ker chuckled, packing up his things, “If it didn’t work I would be very concerned as to what I did wrong,” He replied, “When you become human again your foot will be there, if there’s any problems then come back and I’ll fix ‘em,”
“Thank you,” Carter said graciously. “Just- thank you,” He smiled, true and genuine. It was such a gift, to have his tail and foot back. He looked to Janie, “I think Arria will be happy too.”
Janie smiled back and nodded, “I think he will be, too. Come on, I think we should be getting back to him now.”
