"Yes- yes you should, sorry, Evan," Krystal said apologetically. "Hopefully I'll see you again."
"Yes- yes you should, sorry, Evan," Krystal said apologetically. "Hopefully I'll see you again."
“You…too, Krystal. If…goodbye.” Evan doesn’t finish and walks away, posture sagging.
Krystal watches him walk away, feeling as though a piece of her heart was breaking off.
I'm sorry, Evan…
She walks back to the cafe where she parked her car. Getting in she locked the doors, leaned her head back, and closed her eyes, rubbing her face.
Did I make the right choice? If he'll be safe, then yes…
Evan stopped, turning to watch Krystal walk away. …thank you, he replied, even though no one could hear him.
The day went by uneventfully for Krystal, though she was constantly on edge. By the time it was time for her to pick up her sisters, she was convinced that something bad was going to happen, though there was nothing to prove this. Pulling up in the pick-up line, though, she put on her best smile for her younger sisters as they came running out.
"Hey, girls!" she said. "How was your first day?"
As they recounted for her all the goings on of the day, each repeatedly interrupting the other, only part of her was listening. The other part was dwelling on all the things that could go wrong before the day was over.
Evan, if you can hear me, please stay safe…
Okay… Evan didn’t understand her warning, but vowed to go by it.
(HIIII sorry!!)
That night, Krystal was sitting on her couch, staring unseeingly at the wall in front of her. Nothing had happened. Nothing. She had gotten home, helped her sisters with her homework, made dinner, eaten it, watched a show with them, and put them to bed. It felt… wrong. She knew she was being watched all day, and the paranoia was killing her. Honestly, she didn't know what they'd do… maybe they didn't care… but that was doubtful. The Spades were meticulous, not wanting a single piece of their plans out of place.
Something is very wrong…
(The Spades. I see that. Ha.)
Evan sat up in the couch. What? Text me, text me… He willed her mentally.
(Yee)
Krystal hesitantly picked up her phone from the coffee table. Earlier, she had changed the name of Evan's contact for safety's sake. Now his name on her phone was "Mike Schmit." Pulling up his number, she, with no little hesitation, started to text him.
Krystal: Hey, Mike! I decided to take the girls on a short road trip, would you mind getting my mail while I'm gone?
If you can hear me, I just texted you. I'm taking my sisters out of town and I wanted it to be recorded somewhere in case they look for me. If I was you, I'd do the same
Evan: Yeah, sure. No problemo. What's your address and where should I put the mail?
Evan trembled and jumped into his car, veering out into the road.
Krystal chewed her lip nervously.
Krystal: It's address. you can just toss it through the doggie door.
Evan: Mkay.
He scribbled on a piece of paper: Please tell me what's going on. Pulling up to the address, he scrambled out of the car, shoving the note into the doggie door, and hiding beside the doorstep under some bushes.
Hearing movement outside, Krystal makes her way to the door and looks down, seeing a small piece of paper. After picking it up and reading it, she glances at the doggie door, knowing Evan was right outside.
I'm involved with some… bad people. My sisters don't know about it. I owe them money, didn't show up for our last… meeting, and now they've seen you. Something bad is going to happen and I'm worried.
Evan's eyes go wide. He takes another slip of paper out of his pocket and writes another note. To me? To you?
Still chewing her lip, Krystal has to resist the urge to open the door.
Most likely both. They'd probably use you for blackmail
What? Oh, god.
He sidles another note under the door. Just let me touch your tattoo so I can talk to you freely. That's all I'm asking.
… Fine…
Krystal glances out the front window, attempting to confirm the absence of other parties, then opens the door.
"Come in, quickly!"
Evan leaps up from the bushes and bounds inside, skidding to a stop in the foyer. "Krystal," He says, eyes full of fear. "You're scaring me."
Krystal covers her face. "I know, I'm sorry. I'm so, so sorry," she whispers. "I had hoped I could figure this out before I met my soulmate, but it seems Fate had other plans."
Evan reaches out to gently put his hand on her hip. "Well, Fate does what fate does. I just…want to make sure you'll be okay. And your sisters too."
Krystal looks up at him, tears in her eyes. Taking his hand, she lifts up the bottom of her sweatshirt and places his hand on her tattoo. "Thank you," she whispers.
"What? Is that…your tattoo?" Evan whispers back.
Krystal nods, biting her lip.
Thank you. For…letting me. Evan takes his hand away and starts to walk to the back door. I should go now, before the…Spades…come.
Krystal nods her head, watching him walk away. Before he makes it to the door though, she darts forward and grabs his hand, turning him around and kissing him softly on the lips.
Just in case I don't see you for a while
