Lucas could hear his father speaking downstairs, but he couldn't decipher his tone. Is he coming? He opened his eyes a bit and tensed up when he saw that everything was burning. It was like he couldn't move at all, and he tried to call out, but just ended up coughing. A considerable amount of smoke was now forming in his room.
"Dad, he's cold. And now-" The smoke alarm cut her off. Her entire body began to panic. "Dad?!"
Bob raced upstairs, banging into Lucas’s room and pulling him from his bed. He carried Lucas to Kaly, handed him to her, and grabbed a fire extinguisher he’d mounted on the wall a year before after Lucas had accidentally set his textbooks on fire.
Lucas looked around his room fearfully. I hope he's not mad… and I hope I haven't burned anything important. He started coughing again and leaned his head against Kaly.
Kaly struggled to hold Lucas at first, but she quickly adjusted her grip and stance and pulled him tightly into her chest. "Are you okay?" she asked quietly.
Bob sprayed the fire extinguisher everywhere. He mananged to snuff out all the actively burning flames, then the smoldering ones, until the room was no longer on fire. Most of Lucas’s stuff was, at the minumum, burnt, but some of it looked salvageable.
Kaly coughed as the smoke drifted towards her. She didn't stop coughing. She couldn't. Her chest hurt, but she didn't stop Lucas.
"I-I'm sorry, dad… I… I didn't mean to…" Lucas looked up at his father, shivering. Despite having set everything on fire, he still felt very cold.
“We are going to get you to a hospital,” Bob said, taking Lucas from Kaly and telling her to go get a glass of water.
"What? W-Why?" Lucas lay his head against his father's chest, making fearful eye contact with him.
“It’s okay, I know one that will protect us,” Bob said, already moving towards the car. “You are below your average temperature by several degrees, little man.”
“Mmm… how many?” Lucas asked, still shivering.
“I can’t tell,” Bob said, gently laying Lucas in the back seat and getting in the driver’s. He began driving away, trusting Kaly to take care of the situation at the house. “Too many.”
//i have had an idea. Twins, what if you were around 1st grade age? That way, you guys could still participate and stuffs :)
"Okay… how long till we get there?" Lucas coughed, curling up into a ball to preserve heat.
Kaly watched them leave. The instant they were out of sight, she began coughing. Her whole body shook and spazzed with the motion. She fell to her knees and writhed on the ground.
(Lol, she's just like me! Jk, that's so inaccurate it's not even funny.)
(laughs at the pain
What?)
"Alright…" Lucas was silent for the rest of the ride aside from a few coughing fits.
Bob got them to the ‘hospital’ in under ten minutes. Turns out, it was a house in the neighboring neighborhood. “C’mon, Lucas,” Bob said, helping him out of the car.
Kaly pushed herself up. Her coughing didn't stop. "Come… on…!"
"Y-Yes, dad." Lucas clutched his father's arm as they walked in, leaning against him for support.
