Rowan walked over to the table Professor McGonagall pointed her to. She sat down in an open chair next to a third year. She thought he was a third year at least.

Kai waited a few moments before giving the girl a smile. "welcome to Slytherin." His accent was still quite American, despite having lived in London and attended Hogwarts for three years. He wasn't technically a third year seeing as he'd made up all the material he'd missed over the previous summers.
Thank you, Rowan wrote down on her paper.
"Melissa Calaway," the professor's voice pulled Melissa out of her zone. She'd watched Rowan get Sorted, then she'd tuned out. Nervously, she approached the stool and sat down. She closed her eyes so she wouldn't have to look at the entirety of Hogwarts, but when she felt the Hat placed on her head, the brim slipped over her eyes. She reopened her eyes to darkness. "Hm…" the Hat spoke to her inside her head, "A tricky one."
"Slytherin or Ravenclaw," Melissa whispered. Then, the Hat said nothing. For the next agonizing seconds, the Hat talked to itself. Finally, it shouted for all to hear: "SLYTHERIN!" Melissa felt the Hat lifted from her head and bright light washed over her. She located Rowan and ran over as quickly as possible, smoothing her head. She had major hat hair!
"Melissa we're in the same house!" Rowan signed to the girl.
I know! Melissa signed as Professor McGonagall called out, "Jasper March."
Eilidh was staring out at the wall, mesmerized. She didn't truly know what was going on, until food appeared and she began stuffing her face.
Rowan looked at all the food in front of her. She had never so much of it at once.
Finn smiled when the food popped in front of everyone and started piling it onto his plate.
"Dude was it true that you almost got left on the train?"
"Well you were one of the girls in my cart, you tell me." Eilidh replied
"Oh, I was there too and she started snoring…"
"Well thank you 'friends' for making me feel happy and not at all self conscious." Eilidh pilled food onto her plate and left before they could say anything else.
Helen helped herself to some food and eagerly started eating it in small bites and taking sips of water in between. She watched as the ghosts appeared and talked with the alarmed first years. She remembered being a first year and being scared out of her mind when the Fat Friar came up to her for the first time.
Melissa took a small piece of turkey - she thought that's what it was - and a scoop of mashed potatoes. She took tiny nibbles, so small that it didn't even look like she was eating.
It took him a moment to understand why she was writing, but when realization dawned on him, his head nodded. "you're welcome." once he saw the girl had a friend with her he returned to his book, not worried about eating.
Rowan looked at the boy who had welcomed her. She wrote down on her paper, I'm Rowan. What's your name?
"I'm Kairo Murray, but I prefer Kai. it's nice to meet you, Rowan." he really did hope she'd enjoy her time in Slytherin.
Nice to meet you too Kai, Rowan wrote back.
"are you looking forward to classes?" he suddenly wished he knew sign language, that way they could communicate a little easier. 'I'll just have to learn,' he thought.
Yeah! Rowan wrote down, Though I don't exactly know what these 'classes' pertain to.
it took him a moment to think about the wording of his next statement. "as a first year you'll take classes like Charms, Transfigurations, and Potions. you'll learn how to use spells, make potions, things like that."
Okay,Rowan thought for a second, Do I have to say words to cast spells?
"usually you would, but wordless spells aren't impossible. they're tricky, I won't lie, but I believe you can do it." Kai had faith in the girl, and he would certainly keep his fingers crossed for her.
Thanks, Rowan thought. Wordless spells huh.
Kai set his book aside and picked up some bread, nibbling at it before beginning his meal.
Melissa watched Rowan and the boy -Kai?- talking. She looked around. How would she fit in here? Everyone was so… social.
Rowan looked down at her food and began eating.
