Lets fast forward to the ceremony.
(Oh yay.)
The Great Hall was abuzz with chatter and poorly veiled excitement. This was their first day at Hogwarts since the summer break and in the midst of friends reuniting and gleeful laughter, one boy was not taking part in the festivities. He was sitting at the Slytherin table with a book in hand, and even though he was surrounded by a sea of green-trimmed robes, there was still an all-too-recognizable air of isolation surrounding him. He did not mingle, and no one mingled with him. No one clapped him on the shoulder, no one greeted him with a smile, no one even bothered to say hello. Kairo Murray had no friends but he was fine with this, perfectly content with drowning out reality if it meant he could delve into the fantasy worlds he so desperately craved – anything to mask the harsh truth of his rather lonely existence. He didn't love reading, but he didn't dislike it; it was a happy middle. His green eyes did tear themselves away from the multitude of words long enough to glance around the large room to see if the Sorting Ceremony was beginning, and every time he realized it wasn't he would return to his book.
Rowan was buzzing with excitement, she was going to be sorted soon!
"Follow me." Melissa looked around to see that the words came from the teacher known as Professor McGonagall. She lead them through the aisle in between the Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw tables to the front of the room where they fanned out in a large mass. Melissa could see a pointed wizard hat sitting on a wooden stool. "It's a hat," she whispered to Rowan.
Finn mingled with the other Hufflepuffs, just as excited as the first years about to be sorted. He loved watching them get sorted and loved helping people adjust to the new surroundings.
Douglas was bored, she kicked her feet up on the table and leaned back.
Kai looked up again and saw the parade of first years being led to the Sorting Hat, and he closed his book, making sure he had marked his page. In his eyes was a look of masked curiosity as he wondered which house each of these students would be placed into.
"What does it do?" Rowan signed to Melissa.
"When I read your name, sit on the stool and I will place the Sorting Hat on your head," Professor McGonagall said, holding up a long list of names.
(Is there anyone who is a first year besides Rowan and Melissa? Also, should the hat sing?)

(Yes his name is Jasper)
Calvin rested his chin on his hands, the sorting ceremony was about to begin. To be completely honest, he was a little bored.
Helen sat with the other Hufflepuffs waiting for the ceremony to begin. She remembered when she was sorted how hungry she was. She was hungry now too and was eager for dinner.
Finn sat, eagerly awaiting the ceremony to start. He always felt like a little 11-year-old when others were being sorted.
Helen saw a boy sitting near her, 'Finn', she remembered from last year. She tapped him on the shoulder and smiled. "I'm Helen. You're Finn right? The prefect?"
Finn turned around when someone tapped him on the shoulder. "Yeah, that's me," he confirmed. "I don't know your name, though,"
"I'm Helen." She said and extended her hand to him. "It's nice to meet you."
He shook her hand heartily. "Nice to meet you too, Helen," he said with a smile.
She saw his prefect badge and smiled. "Is this your first year being a prefect?"
Finn looked down at his badge and his smile got bigger. "Yup! Pretty proud of myself." he said, rubbing the badge.
"Rowan Bryne!" Professor McGonagall called. (It'll just be our characters is that ok?)
(Yeah I guess.)
Rowan silently walked up to the sorting hat, she was slightly shaking. The hat was placed on her head, and not a moment later it shouted out, "Sytherin!"
Finn looked over as the first name was called. Rowan Byrne, Slytherin. He was practically jumping up and down in excitement for any new Hufflepuffs.
When he heard 'Slytherin!' Kai smiled just a little while the rest of his table went wild with cheers.
