"If you're sure I won't be much trouble." Rowan said shyly, suddenly worried about interrupting whatever Yuki was doing.
"If you're sure I won't be much trouble." Rowan said shyly, suddenly worried about interrupting whatever Yuki was doing.
“You won’t be any trouble at all. If you want to…and you aren’t afraid of heights, you can come to the roof with me. I like to hang out up there.”, Yuki said. “I guess it will be like a sleepover. When I was a kid I really wanted to try one someday.”
"Me too! I'd love to come with you. I might need a little help though. I'm still a bit wobbly on my new leg." Rowan said sheepishly, gesturing to her newly healed wounds.
“I can help. I’ll even carry you.”, she gave a weak laugh. The her face grew more serious. “I’m sorry about what happed today…with Armand…and your wrist. It reminded me too much of what happed everyday when I was young.”
"It's alright, Yuki. You've been through a lot more than I have. I understand." Rowan soothed. "It wasn't like that. In his own twisted way he was trying to help. This war takes human purpose and deforms it." She shook her head and sighed regretfully. "That's why I'm gonna help you and I'm gonna help Armand. I'll help anyone I can meet. That's my purpose."
“Cool. I’m glad at least you have found a purpose.”, Yuki said. Then her mood suddenly changed. She shrugged. “Maybe we can talk about fun stuff on the roof. I think that’s what you are supposed to do at a sleepover. What else are you supposed to do?”, she asked.
"Games!" Rowan's eyes lit up with childlike excitement. She flashed Yuki a bright smile. "Well we can't play freeze tag since there's only two of us, or spin the bottle because I'm the only cute one here…" She jested, a playful smirk settling in her face. "We could do makeovers! I haven't used makeup in ages so it might be kind of bad. We'd have to find some too…" Rowan trailed off, deep in thought.
“What now?”, Yuki was a little confused. “And you’re right, you’re the only cute one because you’re childish and I’m just hot.”, Yuki joked. A big grin came across her face. “And what is freeze tag?”, she asked.
"Did… did you just make a joke." Rowan gasped in feigned shock, giggling a little. "I'll have you know I'm extremely mature." She scoffed, puffing out her chest with mock pride. "I can't believe you've never played freeze tag before! Blake and I used gather all the other kids at the base to play it once a week…" Rowan's eyes glazed over for a few seconds, lost in a bittersweet memory. "Anyways," she broke herself out of her trance. "freeze tag is exactly like regular tag except the person you touch has to stay still until another player on their team can 'unfreeze' them." She said, putting the word unfreeze in air quotes.
“Umm…Yes. And how about tag? What is that?”, she asked, curiously. “And I’ll have you know I can make jokes even though my purpose is to kill.”, sadness and anger showed in her eyes for a brief moment. She quickly shook it off.
Rowan looked at Yuki, slightly startled. "Hey, I didn't mean to hurt you in any way." She squeezed Yuki's hand comfortingly before changing the topic back to tag. "So tag is this game where one person starts out as 'it'. Their job is to tap another player who is running from them. It's basically a chasing game. Once the person tags the one they're chasing, they get to run and the new person is 'it'. Does that make sense?"
“Sort of.”, she said. “And please explain spin the bottle to me. I’ve never really done these games before.”, Yuki said. She still had a confused expression on her face.
"Well it's a pretty simple concept." Rowan started, a light blush rising to her cheeks. It was clear some of the childlike giddiness had reappeared again. "You get a group mixed with boys and girls and you all sit in a circle. You set the empty bottle in the middle everyone. The whoever' turn it is spins it and they have to kiss whoever it lands on." Rowan explained, mischief lacing her smile.
“Haha you’re joking, right?”, Yuki laughed. It felt strange. She hadn’t laughed in a long time.
"Nope! I set up a couple one time!" Rowan boasted, happy to hear Yuki laugh. "Maybe I can set you up with someone… How do you feel about Kodiak?" Rowan glanced at Yuki, grinning widely.
Yuki couldn’t stop laughing. “This is a real game? Are you sure you aren’t making this up?”, she asked. Is this what it feels like to laugh?
(I have to head to sleep now! Bye!):
"I swear it is!" Rowan laughed, before deciding to try and get to her feet, struggling a bit. With a heavy sigh she stood up straight and stretched, leaning against the wall. "Help me to the roof? I want to stay there all night so we can freak out Armand a little." Rowan smiled widely, a mischievous glint in her eyes. She was extremely happy to have made amends with Yuki. And Yuki didn't say no to being set up with Kodiak…
(Night)
Yuki lifted Rowan and brought her up to the roof. She was actually happy for the first time in a very long time. I finally have a friend who isn’t dead! I’m finally having fun! Not to mention I’m actualy having a sleepover!
(Night!)
Armand returned to his office after the meeting. There was talk that they were the latest section to have a traitor in their midst, and it made them nervous, people eyed Armand suspiciously. And Harris wasn't impressed with his work. "You said you needed more resilient soldiers; this is what I've made." He asked anyone to guess what was in the solution, and when none could even guess the ingredients, he returned his eyes to a still somehow unimpressed president. "I want equipment," she scolded, "deadly equipment." Armand had felt himself filling with rage. What he'd just gone through to bring this to her, and she was unimpressed? He threw his notes on the desk angrily, plopping down in his office chair and spinning. He noticed he was alone. He nearly hoped it stayed that way.
Rowan grinned happily as Yuki set her down on the roof, taking a deep breath and enjoying the night sky. "Anything you wanna talk about?" Rowan tore her gaze away from the stars to look over at Yuki.
"Nope! I set up a couple one time!" Rowan boasted, happy to hear Yuki laugh. "Maybe I can set you up with someone… How do you feel about Kodiak?" Rowan glanced at Yuki, grinning widely.
(interesting plot development you've got here :P)
(I'm just so excited about the Gladiator duel~! So much excitement is going to happen!)
She could shove it up her a++. He'd see how disappointed Harris was when Armand stopped the duel. He'd know if he'd any respect any longer from his idol she'd show it, and was hoping he did. He'd be lost without the approval, he thought. It'd been a while of him sitting and stewing. He wondered where Rowan was, hoping that she was smart, and left with Yuki, that they'd leave and he wouldn't have to pretend he didn't care any more. It seemed like no matter how far he pushed her away, she kept inching closer. She was crawling under his skin and poking around his organs. does your heart work Armand? He imagined her saying to him. Is it broken like your mind? No. Stop. That's something she'd never say. What was he doing? He stood up, planning on wandering the halls.
Kodiak paced back and forth across his cell, mumbling incoherent words under his breath and crying softly. Just because he was ready to die to save others, and just because at this point he was willing to die anyway, didn't mean it wasn't like a deadweight on his chest, dragging him down into the deep blackness of the sea of emotion he felt and slowly suffocating him, each breath harder to take. Knowing you're gonna die is bad, but knowing things can have a different outcome just made it worse, like knowing the rope you need to untie to be rid of all the weight you carried was just barely out of reach and the light at sea level was slowly fading along with his hope. No, this was torture.
“I’m not sure what to talk about.”, Yuki said. “What do you think we should talk about?”
