Tanrial nodded, “Yeah, but that snake said it’d follow us and eat us so we should keep moving.”
Tanrial nodded, “Yeah, but that snake said it’d follow us and eat us so we should keep moving.”
Mike nodded shortly, then turned and started half-sliding down the slope. "Let's get to low ground and find a stream. If we walk in the water for a mile or so, it'll lose our scent."
Bernon glanced at Mike as he followed him down the slope. "Your shoulder's bleeding."
Mike shook his head. "A scratch. It just looks bad. Hurry, we don't know whether or not the snake will stop to digest the bandits before it comes after us."
Tanrial wasn’t quite convinced but didn’t say anything. She stayed silent as they half walked, half slid down the slope. Soon the sound of the rushing river bellow grew louder as the drew closer.
Mike hopped into the rocky shallows and started wading along the bank, avoiding even touching the tree branches reaching out over the water. Bernon took up the rear, watching uneasily for signs of pursuit. "Do you think we can still make it to the cabin you mentioned, Mike?"
Mike had to raise his voice slightly to be heard. "If we follow this until the waterfall and then take a shortcut over the ridge of hills next to it, we should get there just before dark. Save some energy in case there's someone already there. If that's the case….we'll just camp in the woods out of sight and leave in the morning."
“Alright, is it highly likely someone will be at the cabin or not?” Tanrial asked, jumping over some slightly larger rocks.
"It's a 50/50 chance," Mike replied. "I've never met anyone there before, but this area's relatively crowded with travelers. It's a pretty secluded cabin in a spot you wouldn't expect, so I'm hoping that it's still undiscovered."
“Okay, that’s good… I guess.” She said. The travellers didn’t speak to each other for a little while. They weren’t in complete silence because of the running water but it was almost peaceful.
(Sorry gtg, seeya later!)
(Okay seeya ^^)
The current was very strong on the center of the river, and flowed towards them as they walked, so they had to tread carefully. At one point they startled a family of otters playing in the sandy shore. The mother squeaked and dove into the water, quickly followed by her six pups. Even as they swam away they nipped and squealed at each other, seeming mostly unafraid of the trespassers in their river.
After a little over an hour, Mike led them onto dry ground and began climbing the steep, wooded ground towards the top of the ridge. The air got cooler as they ascended, which was a relief as it decreased the amount of gnats and mosquitoes hovering around them. But it was still hard work, and several times they almost lost their footing on the slippery pine needles beneath their feet.
(It's my mom's birthday today so I won't be on this evening, sorry. See you tomorrow!)
Tanrial keep one ear out for any other travelers near by, luckily there were none that she could hear. As the trek wore on, the sun began its slow descend of the horizon, bringing with it colours of red, golds and pinks. If they had to to spare they would have marveled at the beauty of it, by sadly they did not, needing to reach the cabin by nightfall.
Soon, the trees started to become denser as they walked, providing some cover for passing eyes. The twitter of birds diminished and soon the cooing of owls replaced them, ready to come out and hunt for the evening.
(Okay, happy birthday to your mum! See you tomorrow)
(sheesh I need to respect my alarm clock)
"Almost there," came Mike's voice from nearby. "It should be just a few feet north of a big giant rock, somewhere around here."
(Pfffffft)
Tanrial looked for some giant rock, “Giant rock my a- you mean this giant rock?” He asked, pointing at a particular large boulder.
"Yup," Mike said.
There was indeed an old, ramshackle cabin huddled up against the boulder's north side. The windows were dark and all was quiet, which seemed like a hopeful sign. Mike cast around for signs of foot or paw-prints in the area, but apparently found nothing because he returned his attention to the house and cautiously pushed the door open.
With a screech, a small furry creature shot out and ran past them into the darkness, startling all of them. Mike took a deep breath. "Just a stoat," he said. "Come on in."
“What a nice place.” Tanrial said, running her hand over over a table and dust stuck to her fingertips. She eyes the fireplace and it lit, she gasped slightly but soon her breathing went back to normal. The room wasn’t large but big enough for all of them. Small bookshelves lined underneath the windows, also coated in dust.
“How long has it been since you’ve been here?”
"'Bout six months," Mike said, dropping his backpack onto the table and sitting in the sturdiest looking chair. "I usually don't visit the same hideout any more frequently than that."
Bernon opened his own pack and started getting out some food. "It seems like the building's in pretty good shape," he remarked. "Just lots of dust and old animal nests in the corners."
Tanrial snorted, “You got that right.” She said, placing her bag and weapons in a chair and sitting in the floor near the fire for warmth.
Mike leaned back and closed his eyes with a sigh. "Let's eat quick and get to sleep. We'll need all our energy for tomorrow."
"Here," Bernon said, passing out some of the bread and dried fruit the Gardeners had given them. "I second Mike's plan. Who's on first watch?"
“I’ll do it,” Tanrial said, standing up and moving closer to the door and windows so she could see out, “You guys get some rest.”
"Thanks," Bernon said, laying out his bedroll. "Wake me in a couple hours."
Mike was already asleep, his head resting against the back of the chair.
Tanrial smiled a little at them both before returning her gaze out to the window up at the stars. She sighed and picked up her near by dagger, fiddling with it, one eye keeping a watch on the darkness surrounding the cabin.
(Gotta go, seeya later!)
(Okay, seeya ^^)
Mercifully, nothing in the woods tried to bother them that night. Bernon actually woke up naturally just before it was time for him to stand watch, and went to join Tanrial by the window.
"Hey there," he said, yawning. "Man, this hard floor's sure giving me a major crick in the–"
"Hailey."
Mike had suddenly spoken from his place by the fire. His eyes were open, and he stared calmly at the rafters up above. "I said not to go with him, Hailey. You knew he'd do this. He never remembers to watch the time."
Bernon leaned closer to Tanrial. "I think he's sleep-talking," he whispered.
(Sooooo, it’s 2am and I can’t sleep. Hello)
Tanrial brought a finger to her lips and looked at Bernon for a moment then back at Mike. It was kind of creepy to see him with his eyes open but not actually awake.
I wonder who Hailey is? She mind talked to Bernon.
(Wow I did not expect a reply at that time lol, sorry)
No idea, Bernon answered. A friend or something, maybe?
Mike spoke again. "He's gonna get you in trouble. You know Neil and Jonna are worried about you. Stop going out so late." Then his voice changed, became harsher. "I told you, Hailey. He was trouble. Why didn't you listen?" His breath quickened. "Hailey. Come back." Mike's words became inaudible, and second later his eyes closed and he fell silent.
Bernon glanced at Tanrial uncomfortably. That didn't sound good.
(Eh, it's fine. I just couldn't sleep and was like hey! why the heck not)
Tanrial kept forward just slightly, the floor underneath creaking with the sudden movement. She peered over at Mike, he definitely was asleep. She looked back over at Bernon.
It might have been a dream or…. She looked back to Mike, He was remembering
