Bernon and Mike thanked them as well. The woman hugged Tanrial warmly.
"Be safe, Tanrial," she said. "Take good care of those boys, now."
Bernon and Mike thanked them as well. The woman hugged Tanrial warmly.
"Be safe, Tanrial," she said. "Take good care of those boys, now."
“Don’t worry I will,” She said winking, “Come on boys, we’ve got a while to walk haven’t we?” She said grinning.
Bernon shouldered his backpack reluctantly. "Yup, we sure do. Bye, everyone."
As they left to the village, Fir waved from a nearby field. "You're all welcome any time," he called. "As long as you come in peace. Goodbye, and good luck on your journey."
Mike returned the gesture. "Thank-you. Good luck with the harvest."
“Well, that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.” Tanrial admitted as they left the village.
"They're the best flipping people in the country," Bernon said, glancing wistfully back at the village just before it disappeared around the bend. "If I ever decide to retire from wandering, I'll definitely try to settle down there."
Mike turned his gaze to the road ahead, his pace brisk and purposeful. "Let's focus on finishing this job before we plan too far ahead. We'll be hitting some rougher terrain soon, and there'll be plenty of chances for a bandit ambush, but I'm hoping to reach an abandoned cabin I know of before dark. If we can do that, we should be able to make it to Ryker's base sometime tomorrow."
“Sounds like a plan.” Tanrial said, looking back over her shoulder for a moment before turning back to the road ahead, “Do you think of Ryker knew of our plan knew of our plan now he’d kill us?”
Mike shrugged. "I don't know him well enough to be able to predict that. I doubt it, though. He seemed too level-headed and rational to lose his temper when I talked with him before. But as long as we definitely have an escape route before we tell him about the fake machine, it should work out fine."
“Alright we should do that later or tomorrow morning.” She said.
(Sorry gtg, seeya later^^)
(Okay seeya XD)
"Mmm-hmm. I want to scout out the area before we really head in, so that we're plenty familiar with it if we have to run. I would really like to keep that from happening, though. I have too many enemies already without a powerful guy like him chasing after me."
Tanrial roller her eyes, “Yeah, hopefully everything goes to plan and we won’t need to run but it doesn’t hurt to have an escape option.”
"So, to review," Bernon said. "We're going to meet Ryker, give him the fake machine, and see what he does with it. If it's a good thing, we say, 'this is a test and you passed!' and give him the real gadget. But if he wants to do bad things, we say, 'goodbye' and run away really fast. Is that right?"
“Pretty much,” Tanrial said, “Not the best plan but it’s the only plan we have.”
"Yep," Mike said. "And tomorrow we can figure out more of the details, like where to run if necessary and what kind of tactic to use against whatever guards are posted around the base. Sometimes it's just a matter of finding out an army's specialty and then getting them straight out of their comfort zone." He fell silent for a moment and glanced at the cliffs beginning to hem in the path. "You know what, let's go off-road and hike along the ridge up there. This looks like a good place for bandits, and I'd rather not get trapped in a ravine somewhere."
Tanrial followed, staying quiet for a little while, “Do.. do you think Ryker would be expecting two magic users with you?” She asked.
"He's expecting me to come alone. There's even a slight chance that you two won't be allowed in, so if that's the case we'll have to do some quick re-calibration of our plans. But I'll bet I could talk him into letting you come with us. Your magic might be a big advantage, but it also might be a vulnerability, so let's not let him know about it unless we have to. Luckily you both look and act very human, so he shouldn't suspect anything."
(brb having supper)
“Alright, good. Do you know if he has magic, or anyone who works there for that matter?”
(Okay)
"I'm pretty sure that Ryker's completely human, but I could be wrong. As for his staff, I think most of then are human too, but I'm not so sure about the higher-ranking ones. There's this one in particular, a teenager. He's the captain of Ryker's personal guards, and there's something weird about him. Couldn't tell what, though. Point being, don't assume that you'll be the only magic-users, and watch your backs. There's no telling what Ryker's got going on down there."
“Now I’m curious about that kid. Generally humans don’t unlock magic, if they do, until they are in there at least in their mid twenties. For a child it’s very rare so if he does then… I want to know what he is, if he has magic.”
Mike ducked underneath some low-hanging branches that were still dripping from that morning's rain. "Well, I hope we don't have to find out, but feel free to watch him closely when we get there. Heck, maybe you could even ask. He didn't seem like the shy type to me."
Bernon wasn't looking where he was going and got smacked in the face by the branch. "Also, we really can't forget that these guys could be completely nice and friendly, with only good intentions. If they're as powerful and influential as they seem, we'd be doing the country a huge favor by helping them put this machine together."
“Yes but that’s if they are doing it for good, for all we know that could be some super evil organisation bent on turning the world into a ”Better place” when actually they want to make it so only the rich and wealthy live in peace.” She sighed, “Guess we’ll find out when we get there.”
"Guess so. I sure hope they're good."
Mike paused to survey the landscape. "What worries me," he remarked, "is that the three of us don't exactly agree on what qualifies as 'good', and what qualifies as 'bad'. We should probably talk about tha–"
He stopped dead and his eyes widened just slightly. When he spoke again, it was a faint whisper. "Don't move."
Tanrial carefully and very slowly, removed a dagger, “What the hell was that?” She hissed, trying to keep her voice down.
Mike remained frozen in place. "I said don't move. It's right behind you."
A very gentle sound, like sand in an hourglass, seeped through the silence, coming from somewhere uncomfortably close by. It was soon followed by the sound of something very large shifting slightly closer.
"Okay," Mike whispered. "Walk forward really slowly, Tanrial. No sudden moves. You too, Bernon. Come stand by me."
Tanrail slowly nodded and walked towards Mike. She felt something behind her, very close and for the first time she was a little scared. She tried to avoid crunching any sticks or making loud noises.
Once they were close enough, Mike carefully drew his own knife. "Okay, now slowly turn around."
Bernon did so, and made a small noise of terror when he saw what Mike was staring at.
It was an enormous, fat, grey-and-black snake with wide black eyes and glistening scales. Sitting coiled up, it was taller than the trees nearby. Its cold, vapid gaze was locked on them, and its tongue, nearly as thick around as Tanrial's arm, suddenly flicked toward them, almost touching Mike's face. He didn't dare step back, for fear of provoking an attack.
(Okay, gotta go to bed now. Seeya later!)
