Juliet thought about that steel gray gaze as she glazed the ham. He understood… the thought echoed in her mind. Maybe he saw the fear that flashed in her eyes. He knew her fear, he knew her hesitation, he knew her worries. She couldn't decide if that was good or bad, so she fled.
"Sounds as though she was hard get rid of," Sariel said, her voice somewhat quiet. The window, she noticed, was just barely clean enough to see out of. The glass was foggy and the bars appeared to be rusted, matching the rest of the factory. The entire building was one big pile of rust and broken glass.
Zackary shut his eyes. He wished he were a normal Demon, like his father, just drifting around in Hell and doing general ungood. Being unkept and animalistic. Instead he had to be forced into contracts he didn’t want and be forced to give away his body. Have people strut up to him like they owned him, just because of a little contract.
He understands…
Juliet pulled the ham out of the oven and breathed in the scent. He was here now, here to protect her. He wasn't going to use her fears against her, he was against those fears himself. He cared for her, for her son.
He cares…
She wouldn't put him through anything remotely unfavorable. She had to trust he would do the same.
"Zack! Dinner's done."
Zackary perked up and stood up with the smol in his arms carefully. He stepped out of the room and down the steps. Their dinner smelled really good. Zackary felt hungrier than before as he walked into the kitchen, his nose in the air.
Juliet was cutting slices and loading up mashes potatoes on plates. She gestured to the larger of the two. "Specially made for you." She smiled. She set both on the table and took Qhuinn. She set him in his high chair.
Avi chuckled. "You have no idea, ended up getting caught by the police, the idiot, when she forgot to dispose of murder weapon after killing a girl." Avi rolled her eyes. She was pretty deadened to human deaths, so she couldn't find any room in her to care about the poor murdered girl. She spun around. "Hey, wanna go get dinner out before I have to move tomorrow? Also, does this contract mean you have to stick by me or will you go find someplace else nearby to me to live? I haven't seen any contracts similar to this one before."
Standing up and dusting herself off, Sariel began speaking once again. "Oh, sure. And as for the contract, I do have to stay within a certain range of you. However, I don't necessarily have to live with you." As it had been before, Sariel's tone returned to its original flatness as she explained, though it wasn't quite as monotonous.
Avi shrugged. "Ok. Do what you want. I really don't care either way." She strolled over and grabbed a canvas bag and slung it over her shoulder. "What kinda food are you in th mood for? Chinese, Italian, Mexican… there's actually a French restraunt downtown."
Zackary plopped down in a seat and rubbed his hands together. The food looked and smelled amazing.
“It looks wonderful! Thanks!” He grinned up at her, carefully avoiding her gaze and going to his food.
"Yeah…no problem." she smiled. She also began to eat slowly, watching him. Juliet couldn't help be realize… I'm eating dinner with a demon… Though no one would be able to tell by looking at them. There was nothing to distinguish him apart from other humans. Except those eyes.
Zackary crossed his legs together on the chair, set his elbows down on the tabletop and started to cut his ham apart messily. He kept the potatoes and the ham away from each other, though, and started to devour the food hungrily as if he’s never eaten before.
Okay, maybe there were some aspects that marked him more human. Juliet had expected and unearthly grace and poise about him. Like the demons she had read about in books. Yet Zack, he didn't have that about him now. She chuckled slightly.
Zackary was done with his food in about two seconds. A blink of an eye. A flash of a star. Whatever. He sat back, set his legs back down on the floor and burped faintly for the second time that night.
“Mmm…”
Juliet blinked. She looked at his plate, then at hers, then she met his eyes. "You uh…. you want some more? Or maybe something to drink?" She squeaked. She had barely made a dent in her plate and he was done?
Zackary’s sharp steel eyes searched her, giving her the prickling feeling she was being x-rayed. Though he didn’t mean to do this. It’s just what his magic did when he thought something wasn’t genuine.
“Mmm I could use some more.”
Slowly, she took his plate and returned to the pans and pots. She could feel his eyes searing her. She shivered and placed more meat and potatoes on his plate. Juliet placed the plate in front of him, "Here…" she smiled faintly.
Zackary smiled and picked up his fork again. He met her gaze, but she wasn’t being x-rayed as she was earlier.
“Thank you.”
She didn't answer, just sat down and began eating one more. She stopped momentarily to play with Qhuinn or to add little cereal puffs to his table.
Zackary went back to his food and ate it at a slower pace, savoring it instead. He shifted in the seat uncomfortably, disliking the awkward silence in the kitchen.
Avi shrugged. "Okay. Do what you want. I really don't care either way." She strolled over and grabbed a canvas bag and slung it over her shoulder. "What kinda food are you in the mood for? Chinese, Italian, Mexican… there's actually a French restaurant downtown."
(XD I promise, Sariel won't stay so conservative, she's just a bit serious.)
"Whatever you would like." Sariel said, making herself smile in an attempt to lighten the dull mood that seemed to have settled in the room. Although it wasn't genuine, the smile appeared to be so. After years of working with control freak signers, Sariel had learned to put on a nice smile.
(And I’m just here in the corner oof…)
Juliet fidgeted a bit as they ate. Suddenly, she cleared her throat. "So, what will you do during the day?" she asked. "I'll be at work and Qhuinn will be at the babysitter's…"
Zackary frowned. “Well by the contract I have to stay with Qhuinn at all times. Since I’m set to protect him and all.” He shrugged. “It’d be wise for you to just stop making payments to whomever is watching him.”
