Kye mounted Cobalt, shifting slightly, not looking forward to flying again. "Alright, let's get this over with so we can go home," he waited for Hunter to get mounted.
She mounted Magma, and guided the dragon into the air. "We'll be flying a while," she called back. "So you should get some rest."
"Cause I'm gonna sleep up here," Kye said under his breath, as he followed her into the air.
Magma flew for a few hours. Hunter looked back to check on Kye and noticed that he was looking tired. She cursed herself and landed her dragon on the ground.
Confused Kye followed her down. "What's wrong? he asked, coming down next to her. The sun was gone and the stars were coming out again. Kye was exhausted, but he was also stubborn and that was a bad combination.
Hunter glanced at him. "You need to sleep if you have to save this fucking place."
Kye sighed. "Yeah, you're right, but if you're going to help me, you do to. So where are we going to set up camp?"
Hunter pointed to a strand of trees a few yards away. "There."
"Right, let's go," Kye gestured for her to take the lead remembering that at night was when all the weird things came out.
Hunter walked over to the trees and walked around carefully, testing the ground before giving him thumbs up.
He followed slowly, also testing the ground for anything that felt wrong, and being careful to step where Hunter stepped. They reached the trees that Hunter had pointed to, after a bit over maneuvering around things.
Magma lay down on the ground. Hunter clambered up and tree and into the highest branch she could manage before laying down on it, staring up at the stars. She loved to be high up when she slept. It gave her a sense of security.
Kye climbed up after her, situating himself onto a branch a bit lower then hers. He looked up at the stars and noticed Hunter looking at them as well. That was something they had in common, stargazing.
Hunter fell asleep, thinking about Lina. She had almost told her secret, she knew. She should never have trusted that old hag.
For Kye it was less sleep and more a power nap. He kept hearing strange sounds around them, it wasn't until a branched cracked underneath them that Kye realized something was climbing the tree. He jumped up and looked down into the darkness. "Hunter," he whispered.
Hunter awoke immediately. "What?"
Kye didn't respond, he climbed up higher, hearing whatever it was climbing higher. His dagger was in his hand, and he was searching around him. Something sounded from above Hunter. A low, menacing growl.
Hunter snapped her head up. Why hadn't she heard it earlier. She peered through the branches, trying to see, her hand reaching for the dagger in her boot.
From the tree next to them Kye heard another growl. And the sounds from below him seemed to have doubled. "Something doesn't want us here. Also why aren't the dragons making noise? They would have known about these what ever they are, before us." He jumped up to the branch Hunter was on and pulled her down a branch. Something landing in the spot where she had been.
Hunter looked closely at it, then cursed. She pulled Kye down and pressed him to the trunk. "Dilmars!" She hissed.
"Again, something doesn't want us here," he whispered. "Question is what do we do about them?"
"They fear fire, which is why they knocked the dragons out," Hunter said quietly. "They are deaf, but have really good eyesight."
"Fire…" Kye reached back into his backpack and pulled out his torch. "Would this work?" he asked, though it looked like he had nothing to light it with.
Hunter tilted her head. "It might…"
"Good, let me see your dagger," he glanced up at the creatures, as he reached into his backpack again. Pulling out a bottle of something.
