With that response, Hunter pulled Kenzie towards him and wrapped his arms around her, tangling their legs together.
“Goodnight, Kenz,” he murmured sleepily, nearly drifting into sleep.
With that response, Hunter pulled Kenzie towards him and wrapped his arms around her, tangling their legs together.
“Goodnight, Kenz,” he murmured sleepily, nearly drifting into sleep.
"Night," Kenzie whispered, wrapping her own arms around Hunter. Gosh, she couldn't wait until she would be able to fall asleep like this every night, rather than just the few times they did it.
When Hunter woke up, it was six in the morning. Smiling softly at Kenzie, who had her head on his shoulder, he lightly kissed her on the head before grabbing his phone. Eyebrows furrowed, he noticed many missed calls and text messages from Henry. He’d been avoiding his butler for days, but that was only when Henry had been giving him one phone call every two days. Worried, Hunter realized he should call him back. Carefully pulling himself away from Kenzie, Hunter walked outside and dialed Henry’s number.
”It’s about time you replied, sir!” came Henry’s voice. He sounded irritated, but mostly exhausted. That worried Hunter, for no matter how tired the man was, you could never see it from his expressions or hear it in his voice.
“I’ve… been busy,” Hunter lamely excused himself. “Henry, what’s going on?”
”It’s your father, sir,” Henry replied, making Hunter sigh in irritation. ”It might be very early in the morning, young master, but you must come to the estate immediately.”
Hunter opened his mouth to argue, but Henry cut him off.
”I’m afraid you cannot object to this. It will only take a little of your time. The master does not wish to keep you for a long time.”
Hunter sighed loudly.
“It better be worth it, Henry,” Hunter said slowly. “If it’s one another one of his manipulations, I swear—“
“Do not fret. He will not break his end of the deal.”
Hunter sighed, and with a tired goodbye, he ended the call. He didn’t want to wake Kenzie up, so he grabbed a piece of paper and wrote to her that he would be leaving early on an urgent business. He excluded the details, mostly because he didn’t want her to worry about him.
After setting it where she could read it, Hunter walked out of her apartment, walking to the spot he had directed Henry to pick him up at.
About an hour later, Kenzie woke up to pale sunlight streaming across her face. She squeezed her eyes shut tight and groaned. Why did she ever have to wake up?
Suddenly feeling cold, she reached over to where Hunter had been sleeping by her side, her eyes still closed. Her hand felt nothing but empty sheets, and she frowned and opened her eyes. She looked over and saw that he wasn't there.
Where did he go? she wondered, sitting up slowly before getting out of her bed. After having made her way to the kitchen, she noticed a note on the counter. It was from Hunter. She read it and sighed, rubbing her face with her hand. It was too early to think about that, but she almost wished he had at least woken her up to say goodbye.
Hunter didn’t know what to think. After having the talk with his father, he left without a word. He couldn’t bear to be under the same roof as him, let alone in a room with him. Hunter felt furious, an ache in his chest that didn’t seem to go away no matter how much he wanted it to. He wanted to talk to Leo about it because he was the only person who could understand why he felt so conflicted and confused, but he knew Leo was busy with his family, considering they always hung out together once every week. Today just happened to be their roadtrip day.
Running a hand through his hair in frustration, Hunter kicked a stone in his path. He knew he could also talk to Kenzie, but the girl hardly knew the nightmare his father was in his life. Sure, she knew how much Hunter hated his father, and that his father attempted to control him like he was a puppet, but she didn’t know the worst things he did.
Hunter realized he had to tell Kenzie one day or another. She had trusted him with her secrets. He needed to do the same. He needed to get it out of his chest, especially if he wanted to marry her. So, with a deep breath, he started to walk himself to her place.
After looking at the note in a half-sleep daze, Kenzie had decided to make herself something to eat. She looked around her pantry and her fridge, and she was just about to get started on making some eggs when she had an idea. It had been a while since she had last made pancakes, so she chose to do that.
It wasn't long before she had a stack of golden-brown pancakes. She took a couple from the pile and set them on a plate for herself. As she was grabbing the maple syrup from the fridge, her eyes landed on the chocolate syrup. Remembering what Hunter had done the first time she'd made him try her pancakes, she smiled and took it out as well. It might be a good idea…
Hunter finally reached Kenzie’s apartment, although he had to take a cab in the end because her apartment was pretty far from the estate. Sighing, he paid the driver and walked over to the front door, knocking on the door before standing back, waiting for his girlfriend to open the door.
When she did, he attempted at a decent smile.
“Hey. Sorry for leaving without waking you up.”
Kenzie returned his smile with one of her own, shrugging. "It's okay. I was pretty tired, anyway. You hungry? I just made pancakes."
Hunter shook his head.
“Nah, I’m not really hungry,” he said, stepping inside the apartment. “Er, actually I had something to talk to you about.”
"Oh. All right. Um, could I quickly clean up after myself, or do you need to talk now?" Kenzie asked, concern lacing her voice.
“You can clean up after yourself,” Hunter replied. “It can wait a few minutes.”
Kenzie nodded in response, then rushed off to clear things away as quickly as she could. As soon as she was finished, she gestured for Hunter to join her on the couch. She sat down, tucking herself in a corner comfortably.
Hunter rubbed the back of his head, unsure what to say.
“I’m not really know where to start,” he admitted. “You already know how much I hate my father. He’s… well, horrible. But I guess I never really told you exactly why I hate him, or what he did to deserve it.”
"Just start at the beginning," Kenzie gently said as she placed a hand on Hunter's leg encouragingly.
Hunter sighed, nodding.
“It wasn’t as bad as it was at first,” he started. “Noah wasn’t horrible to my mother at first. He truly loved her, and my mother thought she had changed him. They got married and had me and for the most part, we were happy. Then suddenly, Noah changed. Well, he went back to what he was before he met my mother. Cruel, heartless— just a lot worse. He never physically abused my mother, but he didn’t have a problem doing it emotionally.
“When I turned five, I wasn’t allowed any friends. I was homeschooled for the most part, but he had started my… education at an early age. After all, I was supposed to be the heir to the estate. “Anything that he deemed worthless, he’d suck it out of me. At age seven, I learned to hold my tears in front of him, or to never open my mouth unless he permitted me to do so. He meant to break me down completely at a young age so I would grow up to be exactly as he wanted me to. Of course, I had Leo at that time, too, because he was a rich kid and Noah figured Leo might aid the business.
“When mother died, it got worse. I lost a huge part of myself and even more than that, I was terrified of my father. After a few days of mourning, he pushed me to my feet and forced me to forget. He manipulated me, scorned me, humiliated me in every way that he could. I forgot what it felt like to cry, or to hug someone or to have a friend. I wasn’t allowed to see Leo anymore, either. It was… hard. I was nine, Kenzie. Nine.
“When I turned eleven, I was hardly myself. I didn’t know what it felt like to smile or to laugh, or to have fun. I felt hateful thinking of all those kids who still had their mother and their loving father. I hated all those fortunate children. Nothing I ever did pleased my father. I got first position? Anyone could get it. I won first prize in a contest? It must have been too easy. I lost something? He’d make me feel like I was trash.
“Of course, I never forgot Leo. We were kids, and even though I feared Noah, I still used to sneak out of the house to play with Leo. I never told him what was going on. I realized I had become so good at concealing my emotions that it became easy fooling others. Finally Leo’s mother had had enough. When she found out how I was being treated, she went crazy. She demanded Noah to hand me over, because she couldn’t leave me in the hands of the likes of him. She couldn’t bear to see her best friend’s son turn into an empty husk who couldn’t even smile without thinking of the consequences. I didn’t manage to escape from his grasp, but he ended up making things a little easier for me. He stopped emotionally blackmailing me. He stopped with the mental abuses. He let me live my life like a normal student. Well, as normal as I could be. Then I met Keira. After she was murdered, well it got easier for him to keep me in his tight hold. If I didn’t have the Bartons, I think I would have cracked. Hell, I even tried to kill myself, and not just one time. The first two times, Henry caught me. Leo prevented the other one. I almost succeeded the fourth time. But when I turned sixteen, I realized I couldn’t let him ruin my life. So the minute I found an escape, I took it.
“And today he called me over to discuss a few things. He wanted me to take over the company, but he said he wanted to make compromises. He said he only trusted me with the fate of the estate, and that he would allow me to pursue my dreams even after I accepted my responsibility. He said he couldn’t deny it any longer and that he was willing to make compromises. I’m not sure what he wants, but I know there’s something he’s planning. Noah doesn’t make compromises. He takes and takes and takes whatever benefits him but never gives anything in return. Fifteen years of absolute Hell and now he cares about my feelings, my happiness? I’m not buying it. I want him gone. I want him out of my life. But he keeps on coming back every time I find a shred of happiness like he’s meant to destroy it, like his sole purpose is to make sure I never find peace. And I’m so lost and I don’t know what to do any anymore.”
When Hunter finished, he realized he was crying. He was trembling and shaking, and he was afraid. Everything hurt and he just wanted it to stop. He spilled everything to Kenzie, but what if she didn’t want him anymore? What if she didn’t want a crazy, broken boy who hid behind jokes just to forget his painful past? He couldn’t handle that. He had already lost two women he cared about in his life. He couldn’t lose another. He’d completely, utterly break if he did.
Kenzie unfurled herself from her corner and sat closer to Hunter, wrapping her arms around him as he cried. She couldn't believe what he'd just told her. She didn't want to believe it. But she really did, and it hurt her more than words could say. Especially when he'd said that he'd tried to kill himself, more than once, and had almost succeeded, too.
She didn't speak to Hunter, just let him cry, resting her head on his shoulder so he could rest his on hers. A few tears slipped down her cheeks, but she bit her lip to keep more from escaping.
Hunter pulled Kenzie closer, letting his tears spill, because for once, he couldn’t control them. After letting it all out, he took a deep but shaky breath. He searched for her fingers and slowly, he slipped something on her finger.
“Kenzie, I know I’m not perfect. I do stupid things and sometimes I act before I think. But I do love you, and despite how broken I am, I don’t want to leave you,” he took a deep breath to calm himself down. “When I’m with you, everything hurts less. I feel happy, like there’s nothing wrong with me and that I’m perfect. You make me feel perfect, you bring me together and make me feel like I’m much more than a puppet. I know we’re young and I know you might think that I’m making an abrupt decision, but I can make you happy, which I intend to do. I’m an artist, and hopefully an actor in the future so I can maintain a perfect, peaceful future for the both of us. Marry me, Kenzie. You don’t have to give me an answer right away. You can take your time. But know this, I’m not making this decision because of the situation. I’m doing it because I want to live the rest of my life with you. It’s sudden, I know, but I want to be able to call you my wife instead of my girlfriend.” Finally, Hunter stopped talking.
Kenzie quickly pulled away from Hunter to look down at her hand in confusion. She gasped at the sight of the rose gold ring around her finger, then glanced up at Hunter, her mouth hanging open and eyes wide. He just proposed to her. He proposed!
She glanced back down at the ring again, and then up at Hunter. This couldn't be real, right? How could this be real?
But it was.
A huge grin split her face as she started to nod, slowly at first, but then faster and with more excitement.
"Yes, yes, a thousand times, yes! Of course I'll marry you, Hunter!" she exclaimed, throwing her arms around his neck.
Hunter immediately hugged her back, relief coursing through his veins. She had said yes. She had said yes to his proposal.
“I’m so happy right now, you can’t even imagine,” he breathed out. “And I was a huge mess just a few minutes ago. I promise I won’t let you regret it.”
Kenzie was giddy with joy, and she felt she would burst at any second. She was engaged now. Hunter was no longer her boyfriend; he was her fiancé. That thought alone was enough to send another rush through her.
She gently pulled back from the hug and studied Hunter's face for a moment, then leaned toward him again to let her lips brush his cheek in a soft kiss.
Hunter grinned, resting his face in the crook of her neck. She wasn’t just his girlfriend anymore. She was his fiancée.
“I hope your father doesn’t skin me for this,” he joked.
"He wouldn't dare," Kenzie replied, smiling. "He knows better than to get in the way of a woman in love. Even if he did, though, I'd just have to stitch you back together."
Hunter looked wounded.
“You wouldn’t save me from him?” He asked, feigning hurt. “What a cruel fiancée of mine. You’d rather he tear me to pieces than save me. How horrid of you.”
Kenzie playfully slapped his leg. "You know that's not what I meant," she defended herself, laughing.
