"Hi. It's nice to meet you both," Kenzie replied with a polite nod, still holding onto Hunter's hand. "I like your hair, Veronica. And thanks for the tip, Archer."

(gtg)
(Aw, okay.)
(Me too lol. Is anybody else worried about @Topaz?)
(A bit, yeah. I haven't seen hide nor tail of her in a while…)
Archer nodded at Kenzie and then looked at Hunter seriously.
"You do know that you have to go introduce her to Uncle, don't you?" he asked, although it sounded more of a statement rather than a question.
Hunter opened his mouth, face twisted in a scowl but Archer cut him off.
"Don't tell me you don't have to," he said in an exasperated way. "You think the solution to everything is challenging your father, but you're only digging yourself deeper in trouble. Introduce her to him. Get it over with. Anyway, Vero and I have to go greet everyone else. Don't do something stupid, Hunt."
With that, he grabbed Veronica's arm and dragged the girl away, who waved at Kenzie.
"Sorry about that," Hunter apologized to Kenzie. "Vero's kind of… too energetic for her own good, and Archer's always analyzing stuff. Come on, I'll introduce you to everyone before they start their usual business." Hunter held out his hand for Kenzie to take.
(Me neither :/)
Kenzie took Hunter's hand with a nod. She wanted to ask what the thing about his father was all about, but she figured he'd tell her when he wanted to, so she kept quiet about it.
"All right. I'm glad I'm not here alone 'cause I'd probably just hide in a corner and watch everyone while eating something," she half-joked.
(I just realized that I used the word "about" three times in one sentence…)
Hunter grinned, tightening his hold on her hand.
"I wish I didn't have to do this, but it's a thing here to always introduce your plus one to everyone," Hunter explained as they began walking over to a group of men.
"Ah, Hunter McArthur," said a pudgy looking man, beckoning Hunter over. "Who is that pretty lass?"
"Good evening, Mr Douglas," Hunter nodded in acknowledgement. "This is Kenzie. Kenzie, Mr. Douglas and his family manage about a quarter of the country's oil production. Mr. Lee, Mr. Crall and Mr. Pan manage the coal management together."
Not wanting to remain in their presence for long, Hunter passed on a pleasant smile, said he had to find his father, and lead Kenzie away.
"They are corrupt men," he whispered in her ear when they were out of earshot. "Their children are the worst. Hopefully we won't run into them, but-" Hunter paused when his eyes landed on his father, a tall man with brown, with a little gold tint, hair and cold gold eyes. Squeezing Kenzie's hand, Hunter took a deep breath. "Well, there we go…"
Kenzie squeezed Hunter's hand back, hoping to convey some strength to him through it, and walked a bit closer to his side.
"It'll be okay, Hunter," she whispered as they neared his father. "I'll be right here, and I'm not going to leave your side no matter what happens with him."
(It's such a stressful picture, oh my goodness…)

(It really is omg)
Kenzie squeezed Hunter's hand back, hoping to convey some strength to him through it, and walked a bit closer to his side.
"It'll be okay, Hunter," she whispered as they neared his father. "I'll be right here, and I'm not going to leave your side no matter what happens with him."
Hunter forced a smile towards Kenzie, squeezing her hand back, hoping she’d understand that he was thanking her.
Slowly, he started to walk towards his father, Kenzie right next to him.
Noah McArthur was a tall, muscular man. He had wrinkles on his face from scowling too much, but he still looked like he was in his thirties despite being in his early forties. The man wore no mask; his eyes bore into Hunter’s, cold as ice, containing no love.
“Noah,” Hunter finally said when he stopped in front of him.
“Son,” Noah greeted him back, nodding his head in acknowledgment. “Still no respect, I see.”
“You reap what you sow,” Hunter shot back, his voice cold.
“Wonderful party, my son,” Noah looked around as he said that, but his eyes went back into Hunter’s soon. “I have held such high expectations of you. You are blessed with a wonderful future, blessed with a luxurious life, yet you run towards what pleases a peasant.”
“I feel really sorry for you, father,” Hunter mocked. “You’ve had your ego, your head so far up in your ass, you can’t even appreciate anything in life. Greed can only get you somewhere. But it can’t get you far enough.”
His father’s eyes turned cold.
“Do not speak with me this way, Hunter McArthur,” Noah said in a cold voice, danger blazing like sirens.
“What’re you gonna do about it? Hit me?” Hunter asked, before frowning and pretending to think. “Oh, wait, sorry, my bad. You’ve already done that, throughout my childhood.”
If Noah was affected by that statement, he didn’t show it. Nobody seemed to listen in on their conversation and gossip— those who knew pretended they didn’t hear. Hunter knew it was only because of their fear of Noah.
Finally, the man’s eyes landed on Kenzie’s.
“This doesn’t seem to be Keira,” the man commented. “But then again, that one died.”
Hunter’s hand squeezed Kenzie’s tightly, but he did not show that the comment bothered him.
“McKenzie Rhodes (I hope I said that right 🤔),” Hunter replied. “My girlfriend. I didn’t really think it was that important to introduce Kenzie to you, but well, Arch convinced me otherwise. Anyway, if you’ll excuse us, I want to have the first dance with my girlfriend.”
(Wow… Yeah, you got her name right, btw.)
"Pleasure to meet you, Mr. McArthur," Kenzie said coldly as Hunter led her away. Speaking quietly so that only Hunter could hear her she said, "And now I know why you hate your father so much."
Hunter forced himself to calm down, taking a deep breath.
“There’s more,” he said after a shuddering breath. “And you know what?” he put a hand on her waist as a slow song came up. “I guess I’ll start telling you all the reasons why Noah McArthur is someone who deserves to die.”
"Oh, please don't say that," Kenzie responded to his last comment. It reminded her too much of things her own father would say about people he disliked. "Also… I honestly don't know what I'm doing. I haven't been to a formal dance before…"
“Sorry,” Hunter muttered, but then cracked a small smile. “It’s okay, I’ll lead you. Just follow my lead, okay?”
"Okay…" Kenzie put her hands on Hunter's shoulders and tried to follow his lead as the song played. "Am I doing all right?" she asked, looking up at him after a few minutes of making sure she wasn't going to step on his toes.
Hunter grinned.
“Don’t be so tense, Kenz,” he teased. “Get comfortable. You’ll be more likely to step on my shoes if you’re tensed and hesitant.”
Kenzie smiled back at Hunter, then took a deep breath and let it out. She tried to relax a bit and eventually fell into a comfortable rhythm.
“I was a really loud and demanding boy when I was a kid,” Hunter chuckled as he twirled Kenzie a little. “I hated dancing, but my mother loved it. One of my best memories of her are when I was four and she used to dance with me by making me stand on her toes. She used to tease me, saying a girl wouldn’t date a guy who can’t dance for his life. I used to take it very seriously, until I realized she had duped me.”
