"Y-You can control people?"
"Y-You can control people?"
"Shadows. The shadows can control people."
"Oh." Joanna hesitantly shifted. Trying to calm herself down, she asked, "Is that what you'll be teaching me to do?"
"No. No it's not," Sam said quickly, "And to make things clear I haven't used the shadows to control people in a very long time and I don't plan on using it anytime soon."
Joanna nodded. She understood. "So what will I be doing then?"
"Everyone has a power of some sort inside of them. People like me, are born being able to control them easily. Others like yourself, haven't unlocked them yet. Your first lesson is trying to find your power." Sam explained.
"Oh," Joanna looked at her hands.
"We'll start it tomorrow since it will take time, better to start after a nights rest." Sam said.
Joanna nodded, mostly to herself, and took the strawberries to her room. "Night," she called over her shoulder. Hey voice had noticeably lost its bitter edge.
"Night." Sam called back, putting out the fire and heading to his room, rubbing his face.
(Timeskip?)
(Sure)
Sam was up early the next morning. Well, he'd ended up being called out to deal with a small problem in the middle of the night but it wasn't a big issue. He yawned and poured himself a glass of water.
Joanna climbed out of bed and saw the strawberries laying on her nightstand. She picked out one and nibbled it as she headed out to the living room area.
"Morning." Sam said as he looked over and saw Joanna walk into the living room.
Joanna flinched, then relaxed. "Hey."
"Sleep well?" He asked, sitting down.
"Well enough," she replied smoothly.
"Alright, when would you like to start?" Sam asked, grinning.
"Now!" Joanna replied quickly.
"Alright, let's head outside the city then, just to be sure you're not going to set fire to anything." Sam stood from his chair and grabbed his jacket.
Joanna followed him patiently. "Okay. But it's day. Your shadows won't work now."
"You saying there's no shadows during the day?" Sam raised an eyebrow as he opened the door for Joanna.
Joanna stepped through the threshold hesitantly. "No…"
Sam used the shadows in the street to conceal Joanna, "It'll only last until the sun hits them."
"Then what?" she asked cautiously
