"I'm anything but pretty. I wish I was pretty though." Hope replied with a light laugh. She rubbed her arm. She knew early on in life, no one liked strawberry blondes at her school in Scotland.
"I'm anything but pretty. I wish I was pretty though." Hope replied with a light laugh. She rubbed her arm. She knew early on in life, no one liked strawberry blondes at her school in Scotland.
“Hold up, what makes you say that?” He asked with a slight head tilt. He hadn’t come across too many strawberry blondes but she was rather pretty for those he had seen. He studied her carefully, shoving his hands in his pockets. His cigarettes were still there. “I’m going to disagree with you. You are pretty.”
A rosy blush spread across Hope's freckled face. No one had ever said she was pretty. "T..thanks." She stammered. "You're not to bad looking yourself."
He grinned sheepishly, pulling himself up to his full height. “Why Thank you.” As quickly as that small moment of confidence came, it faded. He once again slouched over. “So, Hope, what would you say to a drink after school today?” He asked nonchalantly. If he could get her alone long enough for Marx to show up then maybe Marx could take care of it all.
"A drink? Like alcohol?" Hope said. She didn't think that was a good idea. She wasn't the kind of party girl. She was more of a go to a cafe kind of girl.
“Oh! N-no! That was bad wording. I mean a tea or coffee.” He shifted, looking her up and down. She didn’t seem like the alcoholic type. He certainly was. “No alcohol.”
"Oh, okay! I would love to join then." Hope let out a tiny giggle. "Do you have a place in mind?"
“There’s a cafe downtown.” He suggested, grinning at her giggle. She was surprisingly charming for someone Marx wanted to mess up. “We could make it a date.”
"A date?" She raised her eyebrows and blushed. "Okay. Where do you want to meet after school?"
“How about just right here?” He asked, shrugging. He could have a little fun right? She was pretty. Maybe before anything happened he could at least get to know her.
"Sure that works." Hope smiled. She constantly had the jocks after her but for once she found a darker looking guy, she always had a soft spot for those types of guys.
Lighter hummed happily, flashing her a smile. “See you then, Hope.” He said with a wink. His hand found his lighter in his other pocket, gripping it. He’d have to make sure she never found out about his habits.
Hope returned his smile. He's quite different from most boys. She walked away blushing. She never had a guy talk to her without catcalling her.
Lighter’s mood had lifted. He felt twenty times better. At least he could charm a girl. His brother could not. Lighter was good at getting dates, whether it was his looks or his words he couldn’t say.
This would be the first guy to actually ask Hope on a real date. She couldn't get the smile on her face to disappear. She felt like the butterflies in her stomach were going to make her start flying.
Of course he wasn’t a complete jerk, he would still respect his date and take care of her, but he did have to say they never stuck around. They didn’t enjoy learning about his habits.
Either way, he was excited for this date. He had heard a little bit about Hope. She had turned down a few jocks who became rather upset about it.
Hope was just counting down the hours until she got to see Lighter. She had heard rumors that he smoked. Even if he did, she saw him as sweet and didn't mind as long as he didn't smoke around her.
Soon the classes were going by. All too slowly for Lighter. He glared at the clock, willing it to tick faster just for him.
It felt like ages before the school day ended, the bell releasing them from the prison of a school. Lighter hurried to the spot he had met Hope.
Hope rushed through the halls to her locker and dumped her books. Then she rushed out to the spot she had met Lighter. As she got closer she couldn't help but smile. The butterflies in her stomach felt like they were going to burst out of her at any moment.
He stood waiting with a nervousness he couldn’t displace. It wasn’t over the date, no, it was over what Marx would say when he learned of Lighter’s interest in the girl, Hope.
Lighter was almost curious how it would play out. Would she leave the second she found out who and what he was? Probably. They all did.
"Hi Lighter." Hope smiled. She could hardly contain herself. She had feelings for guys in the past but they've never asked her on a date. She never really had a boyfriend either. Once she got to America, boys swooned for her. She never got it.
“Hello pretty Scottish.” He flashed a toothy grin. The smell of cigarette had seemed to dull from his form. He had tried to rid himself of it. It wasn’t easy.
A nervous glance down at his feet told him he wasn’t ready to meet eyes quite yet. “Your friend isn’t with you I see.” He noted in a relieved tone, a little curious. He didnt like the extra company and was almost too glad to see Hope’s friend was nowhere to seen.
He patted his pants pocket, checking for his phone and wallet. He had both. “Let’s head out, shall we?”
"Ah yes, she's out with her boyfriend. And yes let's go." Hope smiled. She could help contain the thought of possibly holding his hand. She tried to hide the blush that spread across her face due to the thought.
He made a small noise of understanding. He had Hope to himself for the time being. He watched her carefully, grinning st the blush. “Whatcha thinking over there, Hope?” He teasingly asked, gently nudging her with his elbow. “I promise I don’t bite.”
"Oh..uh.. n..nothing." Hope said, nervously giggling. She blushed even more at the thought of his touch. She couldn't contain the giddy feeling she felt. "Okay. I lied, it's a stupid thought though."
