She laughed a bit. “Why are you so scared of me? Every time I ask you something or joke with you, you get kinda defensive. I’m not mad at you for joking with me, Tanner. That’s what friends do.”
She laughed a bit. “Why are you so scared of me? Every time I ask you something or joke with you, you get kinda defensive. I’m not mad at you for joking with me, Tanner. That’s what friends do.”
"It's the glare…"He laughs nervously.
She shrugged. “You know it’s just my resting face, right? I might look annoyed or something, but that’s just my face. I’m not actually mad.”
"Yea…" Tanner takes a bite of pizza and looks off into space. "How was life for you when I was gone?"
She pursed her lips. “It wasn’t all that great. You know I went to live with my dad and-“ she paused for a second.
All of a sudden, she felt the same thing that Tanner must have felt all the time. Where you wanted to curl up, be quiet, and be alone. She was nervous, but she didn’t fully understand why. Here, right in front of her, was her best friend she had ever had. And she was scared. But, she swallowed her fear and continued.
“He was abusive? I mean, I honestly don’t remember much of it, since I kept pushing it out of my mind. I really missed you, though.”
"And I missed you… I should've stayed in touch…" He starts to cry. "I'm an idiot."
She kept her face together, although a tear slid down her cheek. She quickly wiped it off with the sleeve of her jacket.
“I could’ve done more to stay in touch too. I just thought I was being dramatic, and that you wouldn’t miss me as much as I missed you. I know,” she huffed. “It was dumb.”
Tanner hides his face like he always did when he cries. "I-It's my fault…"
She held on tight the sides of her chair. “No, it’s really not your fault. I should’ve told you how I felt. I’m sorry.”
Tanner wipes his face. "N-No… I… I was a wimp…" he looks at her. "I couldn't tell you how I felt before you moved…"
“Well, I didn’t either,” she looked him in the eye. “I honestly suck at stuff like this.”
"… I mean… It's fine… I'm just upset we met like this.."
She shrugged. “Well I guess there’s nothing we can do about it now, so why worry?”
"True…" Tanner looks up at her. "Ummm…. How is practice with Xander going?"
She let her eyelids droop a bit. “It’s going, I guess. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great dancer and all, he’s just not very. . . charismatic.” Then she leaned back in her chair. “Honestly I’m just ready to do the final performance already. But what about you? How’s your practice with Cass going?”
"We're not practicing. I was just a little sad and she tried to cheer me up. I think of her as a friend and well… I will never step on stage unless I have to" Tanner smiles softly.
Piper nodded to indicate that she understood. “Cassie is very much a people person, and she doesn’t particularly hate this spotlight. I think that might be one of my favorite things about her though. She manages to be that way, yet not be selfish at all.”
"Some people are like that. Others are greedy and rude…" Tanner says that as Xander pops up in his mind. "I mean… Can't others learn that not everything is about them…" Tanner foes quiet for a second. "S-Sorry about that…"
The implication went straight over Piper’s head, so she had a look of confusion on her face. “Sorry for what? You’re right, people like that are annoying.”
