(Jesse needs to not be in charge of kids)
Peregrine looked up at Shaun weakly, visibly trembling where he was huddled on the ground. His eyes were wide and round with fear, and he was also trying to see Shaun more clearly through his blurry vision. When Shaun touched him, he shied away, growing more uneasy. He seemed hesitant to speak, and he kept looking around as though he expected to be attacked from behind. He had a few other wounds littering his body, but none nearly as bad as his hands. Upon closer inspection, he looked very thin, with his oversized clothes just draped over his scrawny frame.
It took him a few seconds to process that he had been asked a question, and then he considered whether or not he should even answer. He soon decided it would be rude to ignore it.
"U-Um… it's kinduv a long name…" He mumbled softly in reply, keeping his voice very low so that he might not be heard by zombies despite none being around. "You won't make me go back, r-right…? I don't wanna go back… please…"
(Jesse can only ever be in charge of herself and Ghabiun or else everyone will either hate her or die bc she doesn't care about them XD)
Jesse crosses her arms as she watches the interaction. Her facial expression was very bluntly angry, her lip curling up just a tad into an almost disgusted look, though that was just her resting face.
She had some food back in the RV she debated to get for the kid, as he looked like if he were to shrivel away any second now. According to Jesse though, if you were skinny at all she would most likely think you're literally starving.
Jesse has a good bit of weight to her other than muscle and that included fat and pudge. Her torso and thighs carrying much of the extra weight, though her waist, hips and arms and a good bit too. Since the apocalypse she's lost just a little bit, though she had a slower metabolism so it didn't affect her too much.
"Go back where?" she asks bluntly, her voice is naturally loud but it was just a tad quieter. Though not by much at all. "Is there someone around?" she asks, more to herself than the kid.
(haha im sorry these are so much shorter than my usual ones)
Angela wrapped the cloth back around her leg and made her way too the others it took her a minute but she made it there " is he okay? Whats wrong with them?" She tried to bend over but that only caused pain to shoot up her leg and she straightened again biteing her lip to keep her from cursing (Sorry im on the bus lol)
(you're good!)
"You're not gonna go anywhere you dont want to, kiddo." Shaun mumbles, before he pulls his hand back when the kid flinches, just resting his hand on the ground. He glances up at Jesse before sighing and looking at the kid again, eyes drifting towards the stuffed animal. "..ok, so it's a long one, we'll figure that out later. What about him? What's his name?" He gestures towards the kids stuffed animal, keeping his voice way lower and softer than it normally would be. This is a kid he's dealing with, as much as he dislikes children he knows what to do around an upset one. Also he doesn't want to alert anyone, or anything, to their presence. They don't need to deal with other people, or god forbid some zombies. And yeah sure he could be going a bit faster when it comes to getting this kid up and back to safety, but he doesn't want to scare him and leave him thinking that they're all untrustworthy. Then the kid won't cooperate with anything, even if they're trying to help him. Shaun glances back towards Angela, watching her for a bit. "He's scared and super cut up, so be quiet and gentle around him."
(Totally not still developing Angela 😅)
Angela looked at the little boy and slowly made her way to him before sitting down on the ground nearly biting through her lip due to the pain in her leg she pulled off her backpack and set in in her lap before pulling out half of a candy bar "hey…i know you're scared but we're not gonna hurt you i promise why don't you take this as a peace offering? Its not much i was saving it for my sister when i found her but…i think you need something to eat right? Im might have som water too but if i fo its not much."
Peregrine blinked a couple times and looked down when Shaun asked about the plush, almost as though he'd forgotten he was holding it so tightly, but surely he hadn't.
"Um… he's Dog Man Jim." He replied softly. "'Cause… he's a dog, and man, and… also Jim." It was unclear why he chose to explain the name besides not knowing what else he was supposed to say. He tried to force himself up into a sitting position, but the pressure on his injured hands hurt too badly and he whimpered quietly in pain as he resigned himself to stay on the ground. He couldn't really move without help at the moment; he was too weak and injured.
"You're not gonna take me back? I don't want to go back… they'll give me to the zombies. I bet they're mad at me…" He looked like he felt guilty now, although he hadn't done anything wrong other than perhaps not being very well prepared to run away, but he was only five, so it was hard for him to know what to pack. He owned very little to begin with, anyway.
He looked up at Angela when she approached, clearly wary, but (after a few seconds of hesitation) he tentatively accepted the candy from her with a soft 'thank you' in reply.
Angela held her breath for a moment "is it okay if i held you up? If i help you, ill give you this after. Nobody's getting fed to zombies i promise but we shouldn't stay out here for too long."
Peregrine, naturally, was hesitant towards the idea of being picked up. But even he could see that he couldn't really walk right now without help, so he figured he didn't have much choice.
"Okay… I guess so…" He replied, trying to get himself into a more convenient position for being picked up. He didn't weigh very much and he was very small, so carrying him wouldn't be much of an inconvenience. And he likely wouldn't be being held for too long.
"Well that's a very nice name. Don't worry about your parents, we won't let them feed you to the zombies, ok?" Shaun smiles a little, holding out his hands just as a precaution in case the kid gets up and falls over again. He definitely held back a laugh from the 'and..also Jim' part, listen it was cute and funny- but this isn't the time to be laughing. "Yknow the lady who had the gun earlier? Well, she has a big 'ol RV right over there, and we have stuff in there that'll help your hands, ok?" Shaun explains, using one of his hands to point back towards the road they came from. "Now it's up to you who helps you up, whoever makes you feel safer. We won't force you to choose anyone or do anything, but you kinda gotta make a decision here. You can even munch on that candy bar this nice lady offered you, ok?" At the mention of Angela he gestures towards her, just trying to be as nice as possible towards the kid..although that won't extend to the other members of their temporary little group.
Jesse keeps her arms crossed, watching the child interact this the others, rolling her eyes and waving her hand "that's nothing to give the child" she says, walking away towards the RV, mumbling insults and complaints under her breath. She steps in the RV, her weight shifting the whole ting as she does. Her eyes skim over the rv, locking onto the large blue cooler, though she hears a hard scratch on the door of the back room.
oh when did i close the door? she thinks as she opens the door.
The massive canine bursts through the thin doorway and jumps up on two legs to greet her. She fumbles back a bit but she holds the dog for a second "okay" she mumbles in reply, patting the dogs head a few times before clicking her tongue.
He jumps down from Jesse, his paws once on her chest were now on the floor of the RV. She turns around, picking up the cooler and setting it on the table next to the first aid kid, rummaging through it. She plucks out a can of beans. Why she kept a can of beans in the cooler? No one knew. Not even her half the time.
She grabs that, shutting the cooler lid and picking up the leash and stepping outside, holding the can of beans up "give this to the kid" she says, holding the leash tight.
"I was just trying to be nice…." Angela kinda understood why jesse was so tense but to a child? She needed to calm down he couldn't help it and it wasn't her fault she got looted for basically everything she had which was why she had this lovely bullet hole in her leg which burned like holly hell she stood carefully wincing at her leg before gently picking up the little boy and held him against her side with her arm wrapped around him "are yyou okay im sure wr could cook those for you if youd like."
"Oh… okay…" Peregrine looked nervous when he was prompted to choose who he wanted to pick him up. He didn't want to hurt anyone's feelings or anything, so trying to make a decision was hard. He was definitely relieved when Angela just picked him up; she seemed like she'd be the most gentle with him anyway. Jesse was a little scary.
He was still holding the candy bar Angela had given him when Jesse returned, and he was still looking a bit out of it. He was definitely feverish with infection, and exhausted and starving as well, but he didn't really have the energy to do much. He hadn't ever had beans before, but any food was welcome at this point.
"Oh yes, instead of something he'll enjoy let's give the kid cold beans in a can, that'll put him at ease." Shaun scoffs, before rolling his eyes and getting up as Angela picks the kid up. He rests his hands in his pockets, eyes surveying his surroundings. He can't help it, it's literally the apocalypse so he has to be vigilant at all times. He's come close to being captured or bitten once or twice, and of course he never wants to repeat that experience. He starts walking back towards the RV, humming to himself as he makes a wide arch around the dog. He doesn't like big dogs, especially not violent ones, he's sure Jesse's dog is just as sweet as any other but right now he'd rather not take his chances.
Angela gave the boy a soft smile which was kinda forced because of the hole leg thing, ha i kill me get it? hole because of the hole in her leg …anyway back to the story she walked up to the RV keeping her distance from the dog but grabbing the can from jesse "di tou have a can opener by chance?" She asked jesse this question before turning her attention to the boy "well cook these up for you somhow and then you can have the chocolate after dose that sound okay? "
"Okay… I haven't had beans before. Are they good?" Peregrine asked. His voice was still very quiet, and he kept looking around nervously whenever he spoke. His parents always got angry at him for making noise, telling him that the zombies would hear him and come to get them, and they would use him as bait since it was his fault they'd come anyway. It was nerve-wracking enough even in the house, and moreso now that he was out in the open where the zombies presumably roamed. He held Dog Man Jim closer and looked around, spotting the dog when he did so. He gasped and then pointed at the dog, clearly excited to see him.
Cherry had scouted the area for a while now, was she afraid? No.
…
Maybe a little.
…
Okay, a lot.
But she had to prove useful so Jesse wouldn't kick her ass straight to the streets again, cause then what? She had already walked so much the day prior that her pelvis area, more near the joints where her legs connected to the rest of her body, hurt. And so did the soles of her feet. She really couldn't afford to upset the only person who begrudgingly let her stay with them.
Cherry held a few things in her arms, three bottles of water, some rope, an unloaded gun, and a first aid kit. Or well, what was left of the first aid kit. There were a few bandages in the box and although small, they could be useful, which is what Cherry's thought process was like. Anything that could be useful, even if slightly damaged or in very poor condition, she took. In the world they were living in now, the very least could save a life. How? She didn't know, but she hoped her finds were good enough as a start. Maybe the gun would be tossed, but if they found bullets to the gun, they could for sure use it, just not too much as sound was something no one wanted to make.
There hadn't been much of any building around, but she had found a campsite that had been abandoned, it was clear there had been a struggle going on as everything was violently scattered around and valuable things were left behind. Or well, what she considered valuable-
Cherry stopped and slowly closed her eyes before she started sneezing, again.
It was no help that she had been out in the rain yesterday, fleeing from the danger she had enough of. Cherry set everything down and took a moment for herself as she felt a headache settle in the back of her head and near her temples. It was too bad that the first aid kit and even the store, had no meds left. Painkillers would have been great right about now cause she was a hundred percent sure she had a fever and the body aches told her that she was indeed sick. Cherry frowned. But she couldn't say anything about it. Jesse seemed to be like the person who wouldn't want to deal with a sick person, but….the same scene with her dog ran through her head. She wasn't all bad, even though that's what it looked like she was going for, to look intimidating so no one would mess with her, and Cherry found it quite effective. Maybe she could try that someday, though, she had to work on looking tough. Right now she looked more fragile than a dandelion on a windy day. Someone who could easily be taken out, and it was true.
After another five minutes of walking, she spotted the RV and….people?
Cherry slowly stepped into view and clutched the items closer to her chest as she made her way toward the strangers and Jesse who were now inside the RV.
Angela nodded "well- i mean tey can be sometimes depending on what kind they are their not sweet but they will definitely fill you up for the time being, hey lighten up a little okay? I know its hard but your okay now i promise ill keep you safe…starting by keeping you away from the dog, hea not exactly friendly let's just leave him be for now alright? "
Well Shaun was wrong about a few things. One, Ghabiun was not as sweet as any other dog and would be put down if anyone seen him in the modern world, acting like how he does. Two, to even be a little surprised Jesse knew what to give a kid to make it happy. No, she knew what to give a kid to live, not to have joy.
Life isn't about joy, its about survival. To Jesse anyway.
So when Shaun scoffs and leaves his remarks around for her to here, she whips her head towards him. "Was für ein Idiot" She says to him, spitting on the ground.
"you want ze kid to live or die. Huh? I give him food! Food will keep him alive. Not some" she waves her hand towards the candy in disgust "not ze candy" she says angrily, her accent coming out even more. Ghabiun pulls forward and snaps his jaws at him as he passes. Jesse lets go of the leash only a little enough for Ghabiun to take a few steps forward but not enough to bite him.
She turns back to the kid.
what? How could he have not had beans! it's poor kids food she thinks to herself, annoyed with the whole situation. "no i have knife" she replies to the woman with a shrug. "same thing"
( A little add on because I just replied lol)
"Ah well that would work i supose…and about that first aid kit?"
"Alive doesn't mean happy, you do know what happiness is right?" Shaun raises his eyebrows, watching the dog. The most that really got out of him was a step back, maybe an eye twitch, but like earlier hes not going to show fear around these people. Even if he is, and this is embarrassing to admit, mildly intimidated by Jesse- but the simple solution towards that is to act like he isnt, in fact the solution is to act like he doesn't give a shit about her or her big, scary, mean dog. He's not letting his cat anywhere around either of them, and he himself is only here because he wants his car fixed. He stays outside the RV when he gets to it, leaning on the wall next to the door and just watching everyone enter.
"Oh… not a nice doggy?" Peregrine asked softly to clarify, tensing and flinching a bit when Ghabiun tried to snap at him. He huddled closer to Angela. His parents never let him have a dog, so he didn't get a lot of opportunities to interact with them despite how much he liked them. So he was definitely a little sad that he couldn't play with this doggy since it was mean. He winced, since briefly gripping Angela's shirt when the dog barked had hurt his hands.
"Nope, mean doggy, he'll rip Dog Man Jim to shreds." Shaun shakes his head, watching the kid for a bit before looking out across everything he can see from his position. He shuffles his feet a little and scrunches his face up the tiniest bit. The ground off the road was all spongy and wet with melting snow, just his luck that his shoes absorbed a bunch of it. That'll be fun to deal with. "I have a cat if you wanted to meet her, kid. Her name is Fish and I bet she'd love you."
Jax frowned, kicking his feet in the water. He tried not to get Cass wet, but he did not hold promises. The cool water flowing over his warm skin. It felt nice in comparison to the hot day, but it also sent shivers down his spine. “Well, I just didn’t want to further complicate my wound. You’ve already done so much work. I don’t want it to go to waste.” He held out this stitched up leg, moving closer to Cass. “Phoenix is very handy, I must admit. If she didn’t have hunting capabilities, I might have broken a leg.” Jax didn’t want to anger Cass by possibly hurting himself further. He pulled his feet out of the river, drying them on the crunchy grass. The birds chirped in the trees above, singing their happy song.
Jax yawned as the sun warmed his back. He was glad to have Cass by his side. He may have not known him for long, but he’d been alone for so many years of his life, he didn’t mind. There were many days in the year to learn more about Cass and his daughter Fia. Jax had started to learn how to talk to children, also slowly learning how to bond with them. Spotting a water strider skeet across the surface near Phoenix. The dog snapped at the water bug, trampling the liquid as if she could squash it. He hadn’t noticed the tears rolling down his cheeks until Phoenix came up to him and licked his face. Jax pushed Phoenix away, laughing at the dog. He wiped doggie slobber off his face, turning to Cass. “I get it. Other’s could be dangerous to Fia, and I wouldn’t want that either.” Jax stared into the distance, wondering whom could be out there? Power hungry people? Nice individuals who would help them? He wouldn’t have known. “We can’t stay here forever, Cass, you know that. But this house… It was a lucky find.” He giggled, patting Cass on the back.
He winced, not wanting Dog Man Jim to get ripped up, of course, but he relaxed at the slight change of subject. "Kitty?" Peregrine looked up curiously at that. He hadn't ever gotten to interact with a cat before either. He had pictures of animals on his books, and on the TV before the apocalypse started. A kitty named Fish? That's a funny name for a kitty. He thought to himself. "Where's kitty Fish?"
Angela gave the boy a reassuring pat on the leg with a smile " but that won't happen because we won't get close to him will we?" She glared Shaun and shook her head before mouthing the words "shut up our ill punch you i swear to god."
"She's in my car, I swear she's such a sweet little cat." Shaun smiles, before looking at Angela and rolling his eyes. "If you punch me I'll stab you in the throat." He mouths back, before flashing a smile and stepping inside the RV after them. He doesn't want to get violent in front of the kid, but theres no reason for Angela to say that about a joke he made. The kid got distracted afterwards anyways so he doesn't know what the problem is. He looks around the RV again, mostly for a place to sit down but he just gives up after a bit. He doesn't want to get shot in the head by Jesse because he stole her seat unknowingly.
Angela rolled her eyes responding quietly "you try and tab me i promise you youhead will be rolling on the floor before you even think about picking up a knife " and then her expression changed completely when talking to the kid "alright now let's just open this can so you can eat alright? "
