Arquis’s smile grew. He brought his hand around to cup their chin, then began caressing their face using feather-light strokes. The pad of his thumb ran over their cheekbone, then swept across the smooth skin of his forehead. He had very distant memories of someone—he wasn’t quite sure who—doing the same to him when he’d been young and ill, and it’d always put him to sleep almost immediately.

After a bit of that, he softly kneaded the back of his neck, then massaged one of their shoulders. He kept the massage going all the way down their arm to his fingertips, then frowned. Their hands looked a bit worn out from playing, and they felt a tad stiff. With almost professional precision, he rubbed the softer parts of their palm and applied a bit of pressure near the base of his thumb. He then flipped their hand over to very gently twist their fingers, feeling the muscles relax underneath. His knuckles were next. He massaged them in slow circles.

There was something lovely about having them in his arms as he worked on his hand. He could feel them move every now and then, feel every inhale and exhale. It helped guide him.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin, despite their early protest, soon began to nod off in Arquis's arms. The gentle, massaging touch, combined with the warmth from the coat and their own body heat, was enough to slowly drop him into the realm of sleep, still cradled in Arquis's arms. His breathing began to deepen and even out, muscles going slack as sleep took him over.

@LovelyRose

Arquis spent about another ten minutes quietly working on the other hand. During this period, he began to formulate a plan. Whether he knew it or not, their hands were in quite rough shape. They were calloused from playing and a tiny bit damaged from traveling. It also seemed like the cold air had dried them out. Once they arrived at the inn, he would find a way to treat Rin to a spa day. He’d pamper him with soaps and oils and lotions, if they would allow him to do so. Then he thought about their legs and feet, which made him wince. He did so much walking that they were probably all bruised, blistered, and otherwise banged up. Perhaps the inn offered an actual spa service. If so, then he surely could convince Rin to join him. They deserved to be treated with care.

He finished the hand, carefully folded it on top of their other, and kissed him on his head. One way or another, he would treat the bard with the same tenderness as they had showed him.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin stayed asleep, pressed close to Arquis with his cheek resting against the nobleman's shoulder. To tell the truth, Rin would probably enjoy a spa day, at least a little bit. Maybe. He was aware that his hands and feet were not in the best of conditions, but they usually did not have time to take care of them.

@LovelyRose

Arquis cradled them in such a way that his own body took most of the impact from the occasional bump and rattle of the carriage. When the vehicle finally came to a stop—which was about an hour after Rin had dozed off—he nudged them gingerly. He hated to wake them up, but he didn’t think he was strong enough to carry him and all of their bags.

“Good morning,” he whispered teasingly. “You did not need to sleep at all, hm?”

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin blinked sleepily up at him, uncomprehending for a long moment, and then their gaze cleared. "Mmph, ah…my apologies." he said softly, sitting up and rubbing his eyes with his hands. "I did not mean to fall asleep on you." they searched about for their coat, pulling it on.

@LovelyRose

His expression softened; he almost couldn’t stand to look at them. They were just too adorable. It made his heart sting. “Do not apologize. It was actually rather comfortable. You make a fantastic blanket.”

The driver came around to the back, opened the door, and stuck their head in. When they saw the two of them on the floor, they rolled their eyes, hiding a small grin behind a mask of faux annoyance.

”Newlyweds. The lot of you are always all over each other.”

”Is it time to switch?” Arquis asked.

“Yeah. Next carriage’s just outside. It’ll only wait for about ten minutes, and the next doesn’t come for about a half hour after that. Best to get a move on.”

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin laughed a little at Arquis's comment, nodding to the driver as they shouldered their bag and picked up their lute, checking to make sure that they had everything. "Well. Shall we?" they gave Arquis a soft smile, heading over to the door and holding it open for Arquis, reaching up to help the nobleman down from the carriage.

@LovelyRose

Arquis tripped slightly on the way down and steadied himself using their arms. He let out a rather uncharacteristic, high-pitched laugh, pecked him on the cheek, and opened the door to the next carriage. Much to his surprise, there was already a few people inside. One was a stern man with graying hair and a thin nose. Next to him was middle-aged woman with a toddler on her lap. There was also a curly-haired teenager with a permanent slouch.

Arquis settled into an empty seat across from them and stuck his suitcases under his seat. The toddler kicked her tiny legs at him, giggled, and hopped to her feet. Her mother scooped her up with a weary sigh. The older man—likely either her husband or father—spotted the ring around his neck. His eyes darted back and forth between Arquis and Rin. He broke out in a scowl. Arquis shrunk in his coat, going a terrible shade of red.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin frowned faintly when he saw the scowl the older man was giving them, sitting down beside Arquis and wrapping his arm around the nobleman's shoulders, almost daring the man to say something to the two of them. He had no intention of letting one asshole ruin their day today.

@LovelyRose

For the first few minutes, the man said nothing. He just crossed his arms and glared down the bridge of his nose at them. Occasionally, he would lean to the woman and make an inaudible remark. She wouldn’t respond; her attention had turned to the teenager. She was scolding him for not attending his studies. He appeared to be ignoring her.

Just as Arquis had begun to relax and the carriage had kicked into motion, the man began to address them. “Isn’t my granddaughter nice?” he said, gesturing to the babbling toddler.

“She is,” Arquis agreed awkwardly.

“I believe that raising children is one of the greatest parts of life. Though I suppose you won’t be having any.”

Arquis felt his heart sink. He shook his head, flushing deeper than before, and looked down at his shoes.

“Really makes me wonder. Why would a young man like you choose not to settle down with a nice lady? Anything else is disgraceful. And a waste, of course.”

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin cleared his throat loudly. "We can always adopt, or have a surrogate." he interjected, keeping his arm around Arquis's shoulder. He gently smoothed his thumb over Arquis's shoulder, trying to help soothe him. "Besides, there are so many children in this world already, some of whom are mistreated and neglected and taken advantage of. I don't see why we can't just adopt and give one of those poor kids a home."

@LovelyRose

The man smiled condescendingly, almost as if he was teaching a lesson to the toddler. “Yes, but it isn’t quite the same, now, is it? He or she won’t really be your child.”

He sighed and pat his hands on his knees. It was frightening how casual he looked. He was acting as if he was giving them loving, grandfatherly advice. The chances were high that he’d be giving a similar talk to his granddaughter in the future.

“It’s really just a disappointment, seeing young folks like you two make such terrible decisions. You’ll regret them later on, I know, but still. It must be a lack of guidance in your lives. Some parents just don’t know how to raise their kids properly.”

Arquis felt that same lightheaded, nauseous feeling as earlier. He clutched Rin’s arm and tried to focus on the feeling of their thumb on his back. It didn’t really work.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin arched an eyebrow. "I see. You're one of those types." Scorn managed to leak into their voice for a moment. "Children adopted are just as real as blood children, in every way that truly matters." He kept gently smoothing his thumb back and forth to help keep Arquis grounded.

@LovelyRose

The old man chuckled. “Well, sure, they’re real children. Just not your children. And two men can’t really raise a kid properly, anyhow. It’s only fair that he or she has a mother. You wouldn’t want to deny him or her the ability to grow up right. Surely you’d want the best for your kid.”

Arquis turned and let his head drop onto Rin’s shoulder. The smell of their clothes was soothing, and if he closed his eyes he could almost pretend that no one else was in the carriage. Almost. The man couldn’t seem to stop talking. He’d been given a captive audience, and he didn’t seem to want to let them off the hook anytime soon.

“Can’t even defend yourself, can you?” He appeared to be addressing Arquis. His voice was something near pitying, though it was laced with arrogance. “That’s the problem with young men like you. You give up on yourselves too easily, and once you give up you just accept whatever you can get. Well, take my advice. It’s not too late to change.”

@ElderGod-Icefire

"For your information, sir, I am infertile and could not have blood related children in the first place." this was a small lie; Rin had no idea whether or not he was able to sire children or not. But it sounded convincing anyways. "Leave my husband alone; he has had a long day, and is very tired. If you have something to say, you can direct it to me." they kept gently trying to soothe Arquis, rubbing his back and holding him close.

@LovelyRose

The man turned slowly to Rin. He looked as if he’d smelled something particularly sour.

“Talking for him, huh? I think I see the real problem here. Do you like to be in control? Or are you just bent on dragging him down to your level?” He scoffed and adjusted his position, leaning forward until he was at eye level with Rin. “You might be infertile, but that doesn’t mean that he is. He could still have a chance at a good life. A proper life, with a family that actually cares for-“

“Hold your tongue.”

Arquis had, within the duration of that speech, drawn himself upright. He was suddenly Arquis de Vey, his mother’s child through-and-through. His expression was cold, as if it’d been carved from marble; his voice was deep and officious. The set of his shoulders was confident. Somehow, someway, he’d become the personified version of a violently brewing storm.

“You will not speak to my husband in such a belittling manner. I have given you multiple chances to back down and time to apologize. I have even feigned weakness, hoping that your cruelty would acede to any shred of decency left in your vacant mind. If you continue to push the matter, I will have to get involved. And I can assure you that you do not want that.”

“Who do you think you are, threatening me like that?” His chest was puffed out like a flustered hen.

“Someone,” Arquis growled, “that you do not want to mess with.”

The mother of the two children looked mortified. Her toddler was close to tears. The teenager was still disinterested, but his grandfather was visibly shaken. So shaken, in fact, that he immediately called for the driver to stop the carriage. The four of them hopped out into the snow as fast as they possibly could, leaving behind one of their bags on accident. The driver seemed unbothered. He pulled the vehicle back on track with a shrug.

Arquis immediately slumped against Rin’s shoulder, all authority gone. He was trembling ever-so-slightly.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin stiffened, about to speak up again, and then Arquis was speaking and Rin was quiet, letting the nobleman handle this. When Arquis finished and the man was gone, Rin pulled him close and pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. "Thank you for defending me." was the first thing he said. "And I am so sorry we had to deal with this man and his hatred for us both." some part of Rin was grateful they had such a faint accent; otherwise, surely, this man would have brought up Rin's nationality and used that, too, as a weapon to try and hurt them both. Or the color of Rin's skin, darker than Arquis's and darker than that man's had been. For all that the experience had been awful, it could have been much worse. "I lied to him, though," there was a note of satisfaction in Rin's tone now. "I have no idea if I am infertile or not; I just hoped it would shut him up."

@LovelyRose

That made Arquis smile, but he didn’t kiss them in return. Part of him was still afraid that the man would come back. He couldn’t handle being scolded again. He just didn’t have the energy.

“I lied to him as well,” he mumbled. “I was not merely pretending to be upset. Something about the way he was talking reminded me of my father. To think that he could have been so cruel—and would have, if he was not deceased and knew that we are together—was greatly troubling. But then he began to speak rudely towards you, and I couldn’t stop myself from intervening. He should not have harassed you like that.”

@ElderGod-Icefire

They nodded faintly. "I'm sorry." they said softly. "I…it's awful that he reminded you of your father." Rin supposed he was lucky, in that regard; Kevra was far more accepting of a same-sex relationship than Anvillea seemed to be. Hell, some of Kevra's deities were in such relationships. There were even a few deities who used pronouns other than the ones they were "supposed" to use; this all meant that most Kevrans accepted people who were a little "different" quite easily. After all, they were like the gods, so why should it be a bad thing for them to be like that, if the gods were like that?

@LovelyRose

Arquis nodded tiredly. “My father was a complicated man. He was not averse to punishing undesirable behavior. I was generally quite lucky because he chose me as his favorite, yet even I was occasionally disciplined. It was mostly verbal.”

A stream of memories flooded through his mind. Him kneeling at his father’s feet, receiving lecture after lecture about marriage and consummation. Him at eleven in his bathroom, nursing a rather nasty bruise on his side. All he’d done that day was admit to not having a girlfriend. He’d nearly ended up with a broken rib. When he’d finally shown up with a female partner at last, he was told to go for someone more attractive. His father had scolded him for settling, then had hired a woman to seduce him. He’d pushed her away. That had earned him a good caning across the knuckles and a fifty minute rant.

He’d still loved his father. What else was he to do? Sometimes, the man had been kind—just kind enough to draw him back in and earn his trust. He was just a child. He didn’t know better; didn’t know how to fight back.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin frowned faintly. "That's…not great parenting." not that Rin really had room to speak on this subject; his own father, while not abusive, was highly neglectful. He hadn't done anything when Rin had gotten trapped in a "relationship" with Lysander, after all. His father had turned his gaze the other way, so to speak, even as Rin was hurt and taken advantage of by an older, stronger man.

@LovelyRose

“It was not, though I have dealt with far worse,” he admitted, ignoring the prickle of panic that the words brought. There was no more danger. They were safe. The Palace was a long way away. None of those facts fully pacified his frayed nerves. They did, however, help ground him. He gently kissed his jaw and knitted their hands together, wondering if the experience with the man had unsettled them as much as it had him.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin kept their arm wrapped around Arquis, pressing close to him. They were quiet for a long moment. "We're okay." he said softly. "We're going to be just fine, Arquis." they began to gently rub Arquis's back again. To tell the truth, the encounter had shaken them a bit, but they knew they would be fine.

@LovelyRose

“I hope so. I really, really hope so, Rin.”

His own words from the previous day came rushing back to him. He was tired. Not just physically, but mentally as well. He was tired of passivity and tired of pain. All he wanted was to give up or get better. If he couldn’t do the latter—if something went wrong—then he’d have to do the former.

Inevitably, his eyelids shut. He wasn’t asleep, but all the crying and fear had given him a headache. He pinched the bridge of his nose and sighed softly.

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin kept holding him, closing his own eyes and leaning his head lightly against Arquis's. "We'll be okay." they said again, holding Arquis gently. "I promise, darling." they really hoped so, anyways. Maybe this time at the hotel would be good for the both of them; it would give them both time to rest.

@LovelyRose

(should we skip ahead to when they actually get to the inn? unless there’s anything you’d like to happen in the rest of the ride or the walk)

@LovelyRose

(okie dokie! also this turned out a lot longer than I meant sorry)

[Day Six]

After an entire day of traveling, occasionally switching carriages, and some walking, they finally arrived at the inn. It was a large, three story building out of sight of the main path. The roof was covered with red shingles and sprinkled with gold. Climbing up the creamy stone walls were luscious red blossoms that dripped with honey and melted dew from the snow. Every window was covered by heavy crimson curtains, though many were faintly lit by candles inside. The letters on the sign above the main door were painted a similar shade of red. They read ‘The Cecilia Rouge’ in swooping cursive.

The entry room was small, cozy, and lined with very plush carpeting. Arquis made sure to thoroughly wipe his shoes off on the doormat outside before entering. Inside, a woman in her late twenties was reading a book with a very graphic cover. Her blonde curls spilled out around her blush pink half-mask.

“Good evening!” she sang, leaning over the desk and waving excitedly. She was wearing a silky feather robe that wasn’t fully opaque. “Welcome to The Cecilia Rouge! My name is Lovey. How can I help you?”

“I was told we could get a discreet honeymoon suite here?” Arquis asked. He was keeping his voice low. Though the odds of him being recognized from so many years ago were slim, he wanted to be careful.

“Yes, of course! For how long?”

“A week to start out, though that might change.”

She swooned, placing her hand above her heart. “How romantic! Would you like the honeymoon package?”

“Surprise us,” he said, winking.

Lovey blushed, hopped out of her chair, and set her book down. On her feet were soft-looking slippers decorated with flowers. She walked over to take payment for a week, then showed them through a door down a long hallway. Before they came in, she ducked inside to arrange some things in private. When she came out, she handed Arquis two room keys with a radiant grin.

“Have fun, you two!” She started to hurry away, then stopped. “Oh, by the way, there’ll be a brochure on the desk with all of the inn’s amenities, but there are some basics you should know. Cleaning services always come by at nine in the morning unless you hang a sign on the door. That’ll be on the desk as well. There are also complementary meals and extra services, like our spa. The brochure will tell you bunches more, but you can also come get me if you need anything!”

“Thank you, Lovey,” he said, finding that he actually meant it. She seemed like a genuinely sweet, bubbly person. He watched as she bounced off down the hall, then stopped to look at Rin.

“This place is stranger than I recall.”

@ElderGod-Icefire

Rin watched quietly as Arquis took care of everything, letting out a quiet laugh at Arquis's comment. "Well, you were a child; children often only remember things selectively." he replied. He reached out to take Arquis's hand. "Shall we head inside our suite?" he reached out to push the door open, his lute still in his hand and his bag over his shoulder.
