(I totally saw that coming. He is, Bell just hasn’t connected the dots yet. If you know what I mean.)
(ah he's dumb okay) Alex sighed as he finished cooking, and handed Bell a piece on a cloth, along with a wooden fork, and some salt and pepper. He also handed you a canteen of water. "Don't worry the water is clean." He said with a nod, before serving himself. He then tossed each of the wolves around him a small chunk, and let the small pups wrestle for the rest as he tossed it on the ground. "Little trouble makers, Finn don't bite your brother so hard!"
Bell felt grateful for this person, in the moment.
It didn’t really seem like Alex was one to poison his food as water, but the idea of him being eaten still couldn’t be their out entirely.
He took a small bit of the fish first, before deciding it was probably safe to eat. This fish was probably going to be the best thing he’d eat out here, especially if he left.
It was still too soon to think about thanking Alex though.
Alex grabbed the canteen, took a swig off of it, and set it back down to Bell. He then picked up one of the pups, and pet it as it tried to bite at his fingers. "Hey stop that, stop that! Alright Morro, go take Finn hunting." The male nodded and got up slowly. "Wait no. I forgot you're injured. Miri, you take Finn hunting." The young female barked at Finn and the two ran off, as Alex grabbed a medic bag, and a few books as well. "Alright lay down Morro, this is gonna hurt…Bell was it? Don't mind the loud cries. Luckily I don't have to put him sleep and do any surgeries." He pulled out some tweezers and began to pull out thorns and burrs from his fur. "I keep telling you that sometimes the hunt isn't worth it, you old fool." He sighed and pet the wolf's head as he worked, humming quietly, so soft and gentle.
Bell slowly and quietly ate his fish. He would have given more of a reaction if he wasn’t still chilled to the bone.
He observed how Alex interacted with all these animals, how peculiar this all was, and how familiar this seemed. Bell needed some lightbulb to go off in his head to connect the dots, and he swore he’d heard of someone like Alex before.
He decided to leave it all to the morning, since he didn’t want to think about and because he was relaxing slightly. If he wanted to keep on his journey he’d need to be in top shape to get anywhere, so sleep was included.
Though, it might be safer to wait until after Alex fell asleep. But he also seemed to have plenty of energy right now.
Alex clapped his hands. "Pile up!" And the pack made a large pile, Alex sandwiched all into the middle of it. "Morro, lay by Bell to keep a guard on him." The old and tired male sleepily flopped next to Bell, and closed his eyes. "He's the eldest male here. A gentle giant, unless hurt. Anyways. Put out the fire with the canteen when you're ready to sleep." He smiled and slowly cuddled in, and things fell silent as Miri and Finn came back, wiggling their way into the pile, and there they all slept.
Bell gave a nod to Alex, relieved that he was going to sleep now. Though that feeling was a bit negated because he was being watched over by one of these wolves. It would be wrong to say something now, and it probably wasn't a good idea to leave first thing in the morning either.
He debated trying to read his books using the firelight, then decided he didn't want to risk burning his precious books. So, with nothing else to do, he tried to seriously calm down and and try and look up past the trees. It probably wasn't a good thing to give him a lot of time to think though, since he'd just abandoned his whole life and family. He didn't know if he ever wanted to go back either.
Things fell silent fast, the only thing being heard was the crackling of the fire, the cries of birds as they settled into the night, and sometimes the occasional call of a wild cat. The wild cats didn't like Alex and his wolves, save for the two that he had saved from near death and stayed with him. They had never attacked though, and in return Alex didn't attack.
Bell reluctantly fell asleep after dousing the fire, too scared to move to the sleeping bag and tired enough to fall asleep where he was.
He’d regret it in the morning, but right now he just needed sleep. He didn’t want to think about his life either, or get into an awkward situation with him crying.
Though he tried not to, there were definitely a few tears rolling down his cheek once he woke up again in the morning.
Morro was laying close to Bell, his side touching Bells back to keep him warm and a little bit comfortable. The wolf pack had split apart as they all went about their daily duties, and Alex was cooking up some eggs and ham for the two of them, humming softly as he did so. He looked up suddenly to watch a bird go by, and he seemed to understand completely what it said as he sat there in silence, nodding a bit as it flew around and sat in a branch nearby. He then whistled back the best he could, and then he noticed slight movement from Bell and smiled. "Ah you're awake. Thank you," He whistled out the birds name and watched it fly off. "I've made eggs and ham if you don't mind."
Bell wiped the drying tears off his cheeks, partly relieved that it seemed like Alex didn’t notice.
Bell was also glad that he hadn’t been eaten last night. Alongside his relief though, he felt more and more sure that he’d heard about Alex or recognized him.
He fumbled around for his bag and pulled out his books. His bookmark had fallen out into his bag, so he flipped through the pages until nearly the end.
He hoped the dots would connect for him, since he wasn’t going to last. Especially if he had cried unconsciously and purposely broke his life apart.
Alex's eyes fell wide as he handed over the food to Bell, just setting it beside him. He then perked up when he heard a dog whistle. "Oh good! My deliveries are here! Mika,Morro,Mitzi and Miri. All of you go get the packages. Try not to ruin them this time. We barely survived the last time. And especially when we have a new member of the pack." The wolves all ran off and Alex sighed as he got up. "Stay here Bell. I am going to go fill up the water canteen. Maybe I'll make you one as well for your travels." He got up. "Fierra." The old mountain lion looked up, and gave a yawn. She only had about 6 teeth left in her big maw. "Keep Bell company and safe. And don't let him leave. I don't want him going until he's healthy, well cared for, and packed up properly." The mountain lion nodded and put it's head back down as Alex took off alone into the woods.
Lately, it felt like all his emotions were battling against each other. He was glad and sad now, all of the time.
Alex was leaving to do something, and Bell wasn't allowed to leave and he was being watched. He was just becoming more sure he was going to be eaten.
He flipped open a page with a few familiar drawings on it, following the numbers and letters until he'd almost found what he needed. Alex was becoming more familiar now too, making Bell's heart race. Both in excitement and a bit in fear. Though now, while he had time, he'd reread his book until he got what he needed.
