“So,” Piper said as she picked up her slice of pizza and watched the cheese stretch from the plate, “What were you up to before we, ya know, ran into each other again?”
Tanner looks down. "Family issues…, "he said as his voice cracks. Normally he'd tell Piper everything.
She tapped her fingers on the sides of her cup as she contemplated what to say next. She didn’t want to sound pushy. “Oh really? Do you want to talk about it or. . .” She trailed off.
Tanner shakes his head. "Not really… It's not… Something i just tell someone…"
“Okay I guess,” she said in a smaller voice. Honestly this whole thing was a bit annoying. Why was it so hard to get things back to normal?
Tanner eats a little but not much. "…Sorry"
“No, it’s fine,” she lied. The lull in the conversation was awkward for both of them, but Piper decided to let him talk first, so they would only be talking if he wanted them to be.
"M-Maybe I'll tell you later. I just… It's been a while since we've talked…" Tanner looks at her and sighs
“Yeah, I understand, it’s okay. Take your time, really.”
She tried her best to make sure her words were more uplifting than her thoughts.
“Although, if things really are gonna be how they used to be, we’re gonna have to trust each other.”
"I know… I'm sorry." He tries to smiles and looks at the food. "But eat first"
“Alright,” she said, and took a slice of the pizza that the waiter had placed in front of her. It was still really hot, and she almost burned her mouth when she bit down. So now she was breathing like a dragon and trying not to choke.
"You ok?" He laughs quietly and smiles. "Never pay attention to things still huh?"
She glared at him through her watering eyes. After she finally got it down, she drank a bunch of water. “I didn’t know it was that hot.”
"Sorry…" Tanner put his hands up in defense. " I really am sorry."
She laughed a bit. “Why are you so scared of me? Every time I ask you something or joke with you, you get kinda defensive. I’m not mad at you for joking with me, Tanner. That’s what friends do.”
"It's the glare…"He laughs nervously.
She shrugged. “You know it’s just my resting face, right? I might look annoyed or something, but that’s just my face. I’m not actually mad.”
"Yea…" Tanner takes a bite of pizza and looks off into space. "How was life for you when I was gone?"
She pursed her lips. “It wasn’t all that great. You know I went to live with my dad and-“ she paused for a second.
All of a sudden, she felt the same thing that Tanner must have felt all the time. Where you wanted to curl up, be quiet, and be alone. She was nervous, but she didn’t fully understand why. Here, right in front of her, was her best friend she had ever had. And she was scared. But, she swallowed her fear and continued.
“He was abusive? I mean, I honestly don’t remember much of it, since I kept pushing it out of my mind. I really missed you, though.”
"And I missed you… I should've stayed in touch…" He starts to cry. "I'm an idiot."
She kept her face together, although a tear slid down her cheek. She quickly wiped it off with the sleeve of her jacket.
“I could’ve done more to stay in touch too. I just thought I was being dramatic, and that you wouldn’t miss me as much as I missed you. I know,” she huffed. “It was dumb.”
Tanner hides his face like he always did when he cries. "I-It's my fault…"
She held on tight the sides of her chair. “No, it’s really not your fault. I should’ve told you how I felt. I’m sorry.”
Tanner wipes his face. "N-No… I… I was a wimp…" he looks at her. "I couldn't tell you how I felt before you moved…"
“Well, I didn’t either,” she looked him in the eye. “I honestly suck at stuff like this.”
"… I mean… It's fine… I'm just upset we met like this.."
She shrugged. “Well I guess there’s nothing we can do about it now, so why worry?”
"True…" Tanner looks up at her. "Ummm…. How is practice with Xander going?"
She let her eyelids droop a bit. “It’s going, I guess. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great dancer and all, he’s just not very. . . charismatic.” Then she leaned back in her chair. “Honestly I’m just ready to do the final performance already. But what about you? How’s your practice with Cass going?”
