(Oh they’re in the backyard sorry if that was unclear to hell lmao.)
(Oh they’re in the backyard sorry if that was unclear to hell lmao.)
(Whoops! I’ll just change a couple of things then)
Hands shoved into the pockets on her leather jacket, Ava strolls down an all too familiar street. The bustle of the city, something that once soothed her, had been nothing if not irritating. She can’t stand it anymore. That’s way she’s here, heading towards a place she hasn’t been in years. A few things have changed but overall, it’s the same. Kreja bounds ahead of her, looking absolutely ecstatic. The second he catches sight of the house in the distance, he takes off running, not stopping for a second. He leaps onto the porch and announces his arrival with several loud and enthusiastic barks. Only then does he finally calm down. Ava steps up to the door a minute or two later, having not run like her ham headed dog. She takes a deep breath before pulling her hand out of her pocket and knocking.
(Thanks!)
Cameron didn’t move at the barks of Kreja, sighing only at the knock. Lily stirred faintly, but he gently pushed her down.
“You have to stay, girl. You have thirty more minutes on it,” He murmured gently, pressing a kiss to her head and standing up, crossing his house to the door. He glanced at himself in the mirror, running his hand over his stubbly chin, then opened the door, his eyebrows raised at the sight of the changed Ava nevertheless. He stood in the way of Kreja, making sure he didn’t run in to wreak havoc on poor Lily.
“Hey there, Ava.” His eyes flicked over her. She certainly looked different. And he thought the choice of getting another haircut and a tattoo on his hip was changing. Though he did look older.
Ava sighs softly as she waits. It feels weird being back here. Should she have even come? They haven’t seen each other in three years. A lot can change in that amount of time. Before she can rethink her choice and leave, the door opens. She just stands there for a minute, studying him. There’s not much of a change on his part, he just looks a little older and has shorter hair. It takes her a moment to realize that he’s spoken. “Hey.” She greets, her voice light. She had rehearsed what she was going to say but that just all went out of the window. “Is now a bad time?” Kreja, unlike his owner, doesn’t give a damn about being polite. He’s excited and he wants to see Lily. After putting his paws up on Cameron and snuffling at him, he tries to break into the house.
Cameron gently pushed Kreja off of him, blocking the dog from entering with his legs. “Oh, no. I’m just taking care of Lily,” He answered the question in the way he thought she wanted. Asking if he hadn’t a family or someone else around. Which he didn’t. He never really thought about it until the moment she asked. Sure he was lonely but he wouldn’t be able to bring himself to get a new wife and family. He glanced down at Kreja, grinning.
“He’s doing well. And it looks like… you are too.” He commented slowly, glancing at her. “Well, you’re not dead. You changed.”
“Kreja, sit down and be good,” Ava tells the dog, her words sounding tired. She loves her baby but he can be a pain in the ass. Though he’s not happy about it, Kreja does as he’s told and sits. His tail doesn’t stop wagging. “Is everything okay with Lily?” She asks with a frown. Hopefully nothing is wrong with that sweet dog. “No, I’m not dead, thanks for noticing.” This isn’t exactly how she pictured this going but it has been three years so it’s not like things can just go right back to normal. “So have you. I like your hair short, it looks good on you.”
“She has arthritis,” Cameron mumbled. “She’s getting treatment for it but she’s just not as excited as she used to be.” He reached out and gave Kreja’s muzzle a pat. “Good boy. You’re probably excited to see her.” At her comment about his hair, he ran his fingers through it. It went back to where it was framing his tired, long face and hiding his ears. “Thanks. I like your tats.” He glanced at a couple of them with a small grin. “Wanna come in? We can get a drink and sit outside. But you have to promise me that Kreja won’t kill Lily. She’s just a little fragile now.”
Ava’s frown deepens. “Poor baby,” She murmurs, feeling terrible for Lily. At the comment of her new tattoos, she runs her thumb along the small lily flower on the inside of her left ring finger. That and the simple ocean wave tattoo on her inner ankle are the only two visible at the moment. “Thanks,” She cracks the smallest of smiles. “Yeah, that would be great.” It’ll be nice to catch up with him for awhile. “Kreja will behave, I promise. He just wants to see Lily but he’ll be calm.”
Cameron smiled back a bit and assisted her so she could get into the house before Kreja. He followed her, then gestured for Kreja to join. He crossed the kitchen, getting out a couple beers from the refrigerator.
“He better be. I don’t want Lily to get riled up and get hurt somehow.” He cracked open the beers and handed her one, then went outside to sit down with a soft sigh. He wanted to enjoy the pretty weather. With Ava it’d be pretty nice, too.
Ava steps into the house, looking around a little. She turns and gives Kreja permission to enter. With a slight smile of appreciation, she takes the beer from Cameron. “If he gets too energetic then I’ll put his leash on,” She assures him before heading outside. Taking a deep breath of the fresh air, she steps out onto the porch. Her eyes automatically land on the Saint Bernard. “Hey, Lily.”
Kreja is doing his best to behave but he looks like he’s about to loose it. He trots into the house and sniffs around. After a moment, he trots over to the back door and let’s out a low whine as he scratches at the door. When the door is open, he scurries outside and approaches Lily, barking quietly.
“Fair enough.” He gestured for her to sit next to him, patting the porch step next to him and Lily as he took a sip of his beer. He was kind of in the mood for a wine. Or maybe vodka. Two different drinks but he was somehow in the mood for both. He set a gentle hand on her head to keep her from standing to greet Kreja.
Lily was curled up on her gentle blue massaging pad. She had a fluffy blanket to also keep her down, and she rose her nose when she smelled Kreja’s scent. She barked back softly at him, raising her nose for licks to his ears. Though she wasn’t allowed to stand, so she couldn’t quite reach.
Sitting down on the porch steps, she sighs softly. She can’t but reach out and very gently let Lily. It’s just been too long. She takes a sip of her beer, enjoying the taste. “How have you been?” She asks Cameron, turning to look at him. It’s a rather silly question but it’s all that she can think of for right now.
Kreja lowers his head and licks Lily’s cheek. He knows that she can’t play with him so he just lays down beside her so he can keep her company. With a goofy smile, he snuffs at her ears affectionately.
Lily rose her head and licked her hand with her soft tongue, giving her a doggy smile. Her tail wagged in the slightest under the thick blanket. Her tail wagged more when Kreja joined her, and she gave him a kiss back. She leaned her head against his flank, sighing softly. The other dog beside her helped spread warmth through her skinny frame.
Cameron in this time, was thinking of an answer. “I’ve… I’ve been better. Of course, not as bad as you probably are, judging by how you look, but… I feel old. Cormac left for university and Lily is eight years old, and I’m almost in my forties. And yet here I am, as alone as I was in my teen years. And I know I’ll be even more so when Lily passes away.”
(Oh also Cameron has the cat they got together I totally forgot they agreed upon it lmao)
Kreja curls up next to Lily, lightly pressing up against her. He sighs happily and rests his head on her paws. Though he’s calmed down, his tail is still wagging like crazy. He’s just so happy to be away from the mean people and to have his best friend back.
Ava offers Lily a genuine smile when the dog licks her hand. At Cameron’s comment, she raises her eyebrows. How she looks? What the hell is that supposed to mean? She obviously knows that she’s changed but it’s not that bad. Her features are a little more tired but it’s not like she’s gotten grey hair or anything. Hearing the rest of his answer, she chooses not to comment on it. For now. It surprised her just how depressing his answer is. “I’m sorry that things have been so bad,” She tells him sincerely. “I’m also sorry that I never visited. Things have been really crazy. Who would have thought that dying is easier than coming back to life?” It’s a sad attempt to lighten the mood a little.
(Fuck wait no they didn’t they were never able to go out for it nvm)
Lily’s tail was also wagging just the slightest. She yawned slowly, sniffing Kreja’s ears gently and licking them. She was very glad to see Kreja again.
Cameron sighed and cupped his face in his hands, sighing slowly. “That’s okay. Don’t worry about it. Sorry about the comments about how you look. I just saw you had more scars and stuff on your face. And you look just… sad. It’s strange to look at you like this,” He murmured almost to himself and into his thick hands. And he was upset. Maybe how he has been wasn’t as depressing as he made it sound, but it was certainly taking a toll on his mental health. He wasn’t someone who was built to last without friendship.
(I totally forgot about that cat lol It’s a good thing you remembered how to get it sorted out)
Kreja yawns and snuggles up against Lily. He closes his eyes, perfectly content and happy. The dog’s tail doesn’t stop wagging for even a second.
Ava shrugs a little. “Don’t apologize. I know that I look a little rough. It’s been a hard three years.” She’s happy to see him so she’s just go to let the comments go. It’s not even like he’s wrong. With a sigh, brushes a few strands of blonde hair out of her face. She’ll have to redo her braid soon. “I’m going to be in town for awhile.” She brings up the topic carefully. “Is it okay if I come around again?” It’s strange that until now she didn’t realize just how much she missed being around him.
(Lmaooo but if Ava left the day after she decided they wouldn’t have gone. So it doesn’t matterrrrr! Yaaaayy)
Cameron glanced at Lily and Kreja, sighing slowly. “Yeah. I’d like that. You can come by any time. I’m not really busy anymore.” He grinned meekly. To hide how much he would love to see her more, he gestured to Lily. “She’d like it too. She’s been getting as lonely as me nowadays. Right Lily?”
The old girl just ruffed softly in response. Cameron chuckled, but it didn’t sound like the type of chuckle Cameron used to have. It was as if an imposter took over his body and chuckled for him.
“But I was going to go out and get more drinks. I haven’t had something heavier than a beer in a long while, and I think it’d be nice to share one with you.” Did that sound too much of a cry for ‘please stay with me’? He hoped not. Even if, she would understand, right?
(At least you remembered, right? That’s gotta count for something lol)
“Well, I can’t disappoint Lily, can I?” Ava looks over to where the dogs have curled up. Those two never cease to be cute together. She reaches into her pocket and pulls out a piece of paper, handing it to Cameron. “The hotel that I’m staying at and my phone number,” She explains, letting her hand fall back onto her lap. Truth be told, the only reason she’s in the city is to see Cameron and for a hit but she took care of that last night. She just extended the trip a little, claiming to her father that she’s scouting out new members for the Kosci. She nods his head at his offer, trying not to look too happy about it. “A drink would be great.” That shouldn’t sound too eager, hopefully.
“After all this time, I realize we didn’t have any way to contact each other. Thanks. I’lol text you eventually.” He laughed softly. And by eventually he meant every day he was able to. Having her as a personal contact would be really nice. He could lean on her and talk to her even though she wasn’t living with him anymore. He smiled warmly back at her, then down at his hands which was holding the small piece of paper. He sighed slowly.
“Ava… I’m really glad to see you again,” He finally admitted after a few moments of silence between them.
“We sure are observant, aren’t we?” She smiles a little as she looks down at her lap. While it’s nice not to be dead anymore, she’s really missed this. Hanging out with Cameron always made her happy, even when they were both being stubborn idiots, which was almost all of the time. Looking over to him, her expression considerably softens. “I really missed you, Cameron,” She says quietly. It’s been three very long years without him.
Cameron chuckled at her comment, glancing up to meet her gaze. His heart thumped in his chest as their eyes locked. It was nice to see her eyes so gentle and soft again. He felt himself relax and smile back a bit, relieved she felt the same thing he did.
“So… will you come over more? It’ll be nice to see you more often then… every three years. Lily would like it too. A lot.” He ran his hand down her neck and even gave a few gentle strokes to Kreja to avoid any awkwardness from his question.
Ava offers a genuine smile as she visibly relaxes. Things are less tense now and more back to normal or as normal as it’ll get for now. She takes another sip of her beer before she sets it down next to her. “Yeah, I’d like that.” More than she’ll ever admit. “Kreja would really like it too. He’s missed you and Lily.” She reaches out and gently pets each dog on their head. “If you ever have the time, you can come visit me too.” After being on probation for two years, she managed to convince her dad to give her some space so she’s bought her own house.
“I might. I don’t know if Lily is set to travel yet.” He took his hand away from the dogs before their hands touched. Her skin had came too close to his near Lily’s back and he wasn’t sure he’d be able to allow even the smallest brushes of skin between them. Though he had to stop a shiver at the feeling of her arm behind him. He shoved the thoughts away, making sure they didn’t resurface again. He had been able to swallow those feelings for her for so long, and now that he was seeing her again was unleashing them to degrees in which he didn’t like.
She nods her head a little. Of course she would love to see him and Lily but she wouldn’t want the dog to push herself and get hurt or sick. She absentmindedly runs her fingers through Lily’s fur. “Are you still running the restaurant?” She asks, deciding that the silence isn’t good. If no one is talking then she’ll have to deal with the thoughts running through her head and she doesn’t want to deal with those.
Cameron stared back down at his hands, swallowing nervously. He suddenly felt sick with nervousness,.
“Oh, yeah. It’s the only thing that changes every so often in my life. Those tourists and bad days are still pretty prominent.” He chuckled meekly, not even sure if she remembers those jokes they made. He had nothing else to replace them by, after all. Damn, he was really boring.
