(slaps roleplay lemme just yeetus that fetus real quick)
(sorry I kinda went to bed since I'm roughly 15 hours ahead….)
Carter sat at the kitchen table, going over the information for Broadway with her friend Jamie on the phone.
(No problem lol)
Lucas sat at the other side of the table and silently ate his cereal. He had on his headphones so he could listen to Irish folk songs instead of people talking. He occasionally looked up at Carter to make sure she was still talking to her friend and not him.
(omigod i never even got a notification for this)
Carter looked up and clicked her fingers at Lucas, trying to get his attention. When he didn't answer, she slapped her hand on the table a couple times. "Lucas."
(Oof)
Lucas jumped a bit at the sudden noise and took his headphones off. "Yeah? What do you need?"
"You know that when MouseTrap goes to New York, you have to go with me right?" She asked. "I'm not leaving you here for a month."
"What?! Carter, you know I can't leave. I've got to go to college, remember? You may have your theatre thing, but I don't. I need to get a degree so I don't end up homeless or something." Lucas lay his headphones on the table.
"Well I'm not leaving you here for a month by yourself!" She fired back. "I worked hard for this apartment and I'm not gonna let you look after it. I know that Vivian would look after you, but dad won't let you back in their home."
"I'm responsible! I'm twenty years old now, Carter. You could trust me, you know." Does she really think that little of me? I'm an adult, for god's sake!
"No, I can't. I can't trust you, I never have been able to fully trust you. You don't even have a job, for fuck's sake! I started a business 10 year ago and now we're going on Broadway. You can't look after yourself."
Lucas flinched a bit. So she does think that little of me… "I-I… what if I got a job? I mean, I sort of do already, j-just not exactly in the traditional sense… you know I was going to be doing commissions until I get a degree!"
"You need to have a proper job, at least at Walmart or something. I was running a fucking business while in college, having a simple job would b eso much easier."
"What's wrong with doing commissions? It's still a job, it just doesn't have set hours or wages…" Lucas looked down at the table nervously.
"What's wrong with it?" Carter asked. "I'll tell you what's wrong with it. It's not a stable job. You can't guarantee a steady income, and you live off me. You can't do that forever."
"Well, maybe it wouldn't be as much of a problem for me to afford anything if father helped out a little more. It's no secret that he likes you more."
Carter heard Jamie whisper goodbye and hand up the phone, knowing that he knew it was going to get heated. She put her phone on the table. "Well I'm sorry for being the successful kid, while you're gallivanting around doing nothing with no job trying to make a living off commissions that no one asks for!"
"I-I'm trying my best, Carter! It's hard for me! Not everyone can just up and start a damn theatre company and expect it to work out. Some of us need to go to college before we can get decent jobs." Lucas didn't usually swear, so he was definitely growing more irritated.
"I went to college and had a job. You don't have an excuse. You can't just expect everyone to do everything for you like you always have. You need to go out and do things for yourself."
"I don't expect people to do everything for me! Sure, it's nice to have help every once in a while, but I still make money and buy my own food and stuff."
"Yeah, barely. I've seen you take money out of my purse, Lucas." Carter sighed. "Look, you're coming with me whether you like it or not. I'm your sister and believe it or not, I care for you."
"C-Carter, I can't leave…" Lucas seemed more upset or desperate than angry now. "I… I-I know you're basically the only family I have left, b-but I can't just not go to college…"
"And I can't just not go to New York! I'm sorry, but right now you can't look after yourself. You don't have a job and you can't make money."
"I… I-I need some time…" Lucas picked up his headphones with trembling hands and went up to his room as calmly as he could. He sat on his bed and turned his music up loud, drawing his knees up to his chest and hiding his face in them.
Carter sighed, rubbing her face. She didn't like fighting with Lucas, but it seemed to always happen. She grabbed her phone and then walked into the small soundproof recording studio that came along with the apartment, starting to practice both the script and the songs a bit.
