“If he reacts badly, I don’t know what I’d do,” she admitted bitterly. “He cares. So much.”
“If he reacts badly, I don’t know what I’d do,” she admitted bitterly. “He cares. So much.”
“I know. I know, Eden,” Ashley murmured gently. “He talked to Luke, you know. Told him how much he likes you. You should try to talk to him.”
Eden stiffened in her arms. Sterling… told Lucas? He told him he likes her? Sterling likes her. And he told her brother. Lucas told her he had missed her, but he never mentioned…
“I don’t think I can right now,” she mumbled. “I’m exhausted. I don’t know what I’d do if I talked to him.”
“You don’t have to right now, but… soon. You should talk to him soon,” Ashley said softly. She pulled away and gave her friend a small smile. “So I think Lucas and I are going to disappear for a bit… Unless you wanted to do something together? We could go shopping, maybe? Just you and me.”
Eden merely nodded, not returning the smile Ashley gave her.
“You both go,” she said softly. “I want to be alone.”
“Are you sure?” Ashley asked softly, taking Eden’s hands in her own soft grip. “You can even call me if you change your mind.”
“I’m fine,” Eden repeated, looking down at their hands again. “You both go.”
Ashley nodded slowly. “All right. We’ll see you later, Eden,” she murmured before releasing her hands and stepping back toward her boyfriend.
Lucas gave his sister a smile, but she turned around without looking, and walked back into her own room like a lifeless doll. He sighed. He should have known it wouldn’t be so easy…
“C’mon,” he grabbed Ashley’s hand. “Let’s go to my room and talk.”
Ashley watched Eden walk away, until she felt a hand taking hers. She drew her eyes up to Lucas’s, nodding in agreement. As they walked to the bedroom they often shared, she leaned against his side and let it a sigh.
“Soon. She’ll get better soon,” she whispered, more to herself than Luke.
Lucas squeezed her hand tightly.
“I failed her, you know,” he said softly. “When we were fourteen, I promised her I would protect her. I told her that was my only goal, and I failed.”
“You didn’t know, Luke. Neither of us did. She tried to tell us, I know, but… She didn’t say anything,” Ashley murmured as they stepped through the door. “That made no sense. You know what I mean, though.”
Lucas didn’t say anything. He merely closed the door and pulled Ashley to him.
“When we have kids,” he started softly. “We’re going to do an entire background check on every person they hang out with. Especially if that person is their love interest.”
Ashley chuckled softly and buried her face in his neck, wrapping her own arms around him. “When… I like that you say that. When we have kids,” she mused softly. “Have I told you how much I love you today?”
Lucas hummed, kissing the tip of her nose.
“You have not,” he murmured. “Do tell me, Ash. Tell me you love me.”
“I love you so much, Luca… I love you like the moon that chases the sun every night, simply wanting to be with its lover,” Ashley murmured, reaching up to press her lips to his gently.
Lucas pressed their lips together harder, holding her tighter.
“I love you, too, Ash,” he murmured. “For as long as there’s life on Earth, I will continue to love you.”
Ashley hummed and closed her eyes, tightening her arms around him. She lifted a hand to cup his cheek, brushing her thumb against his skin.
Lucas kissed her harder, pulling her closer to him, pressing until her back was to the wall.
“Thank you for being mine,” he whispered against her mouth. “Thank you for loving me.”
“Thank you for giving me a chance. I know it’s weird dating your sister’s best friend,” Ashley murmured back, right before she slipped her tongue over his lips. He might have her against the wall, but that didn’t mean he had an advantage.
Pink exploded on Lucas’s cheeks when her tongue trailed his lips. No matter how many times he tried to take control, she would always come out on top. He bit down on her lip in return, tugging on it before prying her mouth open with his tongue.
Ashley bit back the groan that tugged at her throat. She pushed her own tongue against his, her hands shifting to his chest. Gripping his shirt tightly, she tugged him closer to herself.
Lucas tugged on her shirt as a silent request, leaving her mouth to trace kisses down her neck to the spot where he knew she was most sensitive at.
A puff of breath escaped Ashley’s lips when Lucas pressed kisses down her neck. She felt him tug on her shirt and placed her hands flat against his chest.
“Eden,” she murmured, reminding him that his sister was in just the other room.
Lucas breathed heavily. “I guess you’ll have to be quiet then, huh?” He muttered, lips still on her neck. “But you’re right. I’ll refrain from doing this.”
