Sugar snarled with even more intensity. She ran over to the door and spun to face them. Her paws were stretched out in front of her. If it hadn't been for the baring of her tiny teeth, she almost would've looked like she was playing. It was clear that she'd bite Ari if she thought she had to. Lovey frowned and got to her feet. Her pet's tail drooped slightly, but she didn't move from her position. She was a whole six pounds of protective fury.
"Sugar," Honey groaned. "Really, it's okay. He's not gonna do anything. I'm fine!"
Ophia blanched. Her hands hovered in the empty air before her, halfway to reaching out to Myr. She slowly retracted her arms. There was a look of indescribable anger on her face. When Arquis returned and saw that expression, he stayed back, as if he worried she was going to snap. She was like an avenging goddess, ready to smite a wrongdoer, or a bird of prey.
"Is that the truth?" she asked coldly.
"No! No, I have no clue what the hell they're talking about, I- please, you've gotta help me," he begged. A thought came into his head, and he smiled triumphantly through his tears. "You're a doctor! This is your job! You have to help, or I'll get you fired for malpractice, or- or I'll-"
"You'll do what, exactly?"
"Anything! I can burn this place down, I can do it! And I will! I will!" He reached out for the nearby hearth, and a huge puff of smoke burst out. Sparks showered down to the carpet. Arquis made a dash for the kitchen, where he seized the luckily still-cool pot of water and hurried back. Myr laughed deliriously, though it turned into a wounded gasp, and he pointed at Ophia. The flames raced to obey, tearing across the carpet towards her feet.
