He nods and smiles.
She held his hand as the walked inside.
He followed quietly.
She got them a table, and as predicted, there was no wait. They were seated somewhere in the belly of the restaurant, kinda floating in the middle of the floor.
He held smiled and sighed thanks
Eden beamed as they sat there together, figuring out what to order. After the waiter took their orders, something occurred to her, “Do you have any siblings?”
He shook his head.
She nodded, contemplative. “What about your parents?” She asked.
'Dead…' he looked away
“Oh.” She felt like she should have no better than to ask. And now that she had she didn’t know what to do with the answer, so she did what she did when she was uncomfortable: press it down and forget it. For now, that consisted of sitting in silence pretending to find the table very interesting.
After a while, jack started crying.
(Oh shit)
“Oh no. Are you okay?” Eden whispered. She felt really, really bad. “I’m sorry.”
'I-I will be…' he said wiping his tears.
“Okay. You sure? Is there anything I can do? I’m really sorry.” She rubbed her thumb across his hand trying to convey safety and peace and comfort.
He shook his head and typed, 'I mean it. I'm fine.'
“Okay. I’m sorry.”
'Don't be.'
“Okay.” The food arrived.
He signed thanks.
Eden’s leg started bouncing up and down subconsciously. She didn’t even notice it. She held onto Jacks hand for a few moments longer.
He smiled weakly at her.
She smiled back. note to self: no more questions about Jack’s family.
He uses his other hand to eat.
